If you’ve ever spent hours building a funnel and felt frustrated because the design didn’t seem to match the quality of your product, then this post is for you. I just rewatched an incredible presentation by Kathryn Jones that opened my eyes to an often-overlooked step: Design Hacking.
Here’s what I learned and how you can apply it to create high-converting funnels without needing to be a design expert.
Why Design Hacking Beats Pretty Pages Every Time:
Contrary to popular belief, good design isn’t about looking pretty. Kathryn stressed this point hard: good design equals conversions, not just aesthetics. No matter how "pretty" your page looks, it won’t matter if it doesn’t convert. So how do you design a page that converts?
Kathryn shared two key frameworks:
Framework #1: SWIPES Method for Recreating Any Page
This framework allows you to reverse-engineer any high-converting page using these six steps:
- Structure: Identify how the page is built (sections, rows, and columns). Match this in your funnel editor.
- Words: Use tools like Fontface Ninja to figure out fonts and paste in the copy.
- Images: Right-click, save, and upload similar images into your editor.
- Paint: Use ColorPick Eyedropper to match colors exactly, and change your funnel’s background, buttons, and text colors.
- Energy: Make sure all buttons and hyperlinks work seamlessly.
- Spacing: Measure space between elements with Page Ruler and adjust accordingly.
This method allows you to take any funnel, reverse-engineer it, and design your own in a way that converts, without ever touching Photoshop.
Framework #2: ABCDE Method for Custom Designs
The second framework Kathryn shared was how to build high-converting custom designs using these steps:
- Answer: What’s converting in your niche? What action do you want your audience to take?
- Brainstorm: Look at competitors who are killing it and note what’s working. Are there patterns? Big headlines, similar fonts, or specific CTA placements?
- Collect: Gather testimonials, images, and similar content that matches what’s working.
- Design: Sketch your design using the patterns you discovered. Execute in the editor.
- Execute: Follow the SWIPES method to build your funnel structure, upload images, and adjust fonts and spacing.
With this process, you’re not just copying someone else’s design—you’re strategically creating a custom funnel that is engineered to convert based on data and proven elements.
How You Can Apply This:
If you’re building funnels, this is a game-changer. Start by looking at successful competitors in your niche. Use the SWIPES method to reverse-engineer their pages and then make it your own by focusing on conversion, not just aesthetics. Tools like ColorPick, Fontface Ninja, and Page Ruler make it easy to break down any site. Once you’ve mastered recreating sites, you can start creating high-converting custom designs by analyzing what’s working in your space and applying those principles.
How I’m Putting This Into Practice:
Kathryn is playing a big part in the NEW Funnel Builder Coaching & Certification Program!
And one of our first challenges is to use the SWIPES method to recreate a page. So that’s what I’ll be doing today to get my next Badge!
Now it’s your turn! Which step in the SWIPES method will you focus on first?
