[Emotional Release Techniques] The Steering Wheel
I want you to imagine for a moment that your life is like driving a car 🚗
When you look down at the wheel, whose hands are on the steering wheel?
Yours? Your spouse's? Your children's? God's? Your parents'? Your boss? Your neighbor? The weird, offensive person trolling you online?
Who is driving your life?
Now I want you to do something.
I want you to look at all the hands on your steering wheel and start pulling them off.
Take off the hands of the people on Social Media.
Take off the hands of your neighbors, your boss, your extended family members.
You should be able to see some of the steering wheel now!
Take your parent's hands and remove them.
Now take your children's hands off your steering wheel. You may put your hands on their steering wheel (for a time, until they are adults) but they do not have a place on your steering wheel. You can make sure they are buckled safely in the back seat, but they do not get to touch your steering wheel. You are the adult. You are the parent. You are the authority, the decision maker, the driver of your own life.
Now you get to lovingly, and gently take the hands of your spouse off of your steering wheel. He/She gets to be your partner, sitting by your side, helping you navigate as you drive your life. You can decide together where you want to go and the route that you're taking to get there. But you are fully responsible for your life, your decisions, and the consequences of those decisions. You don't get to blame your spouse. You have your agency.
Now, look at your steering wheel. Whose hands do you see? Yours and God's.
But guess what?! God doesn't want to drive your car!! He wants you to use the gift He gave you! The greatest gift and the greatest commandment.
He wants you to use your AGENCY. God says, I will sit next to you! I will hand you the map! I will tell you the directions, if you ask me! But you are going to drive your own car!!! He will never take away your agency. He wants you to CHOOSE. He will always be there when you need Him. He will send the help, the roadsigns, the mechanic, and even at times...the tow truck.
But your life is your own. You get to be in charge. You get to make the decisions. So when you make a wrong decision, guess what? You get to own it!
This is actually very empowering to do, removing all hands off of your steering wheel, because when you have no one to blame but yourself for all your failures, setbacks, mistakes, and detours... then and only then do you have the power to change it.
You are no longer a victim, but an agent unto yourself. Now that you've taken the gift of Agency and utilized the power of it, don't forget the Greatest Commandment that God gave along with it.
Love The Lord Thy God, and Love Your Neighbor As Thyself.
Now that you are in control of your own life, nobody else is driving your car, you can use your agency to LOVE God and all of His Children, and it is so much easier to do because you are no longer resenting your parents for trying to steer your car.
You no longer get irritated when the neighbor does something dumb because their hands aren't on your steering wheel. You aren't living your life to please them!
You get to be grateful to God for all the help He sends; the GPS, the roadsigns, the repairmen, the tow truck. You get to see His hand in your life, ask His direction, and make your own decisions.
To fully and truly love others, you need to get their hands off of your steering wheel.
