2nd Class Success Story 🎉
Seep’s story is exactly why we do what we do. When he first reached out, he was in a tough place—new to the industry, feeling stuck, and trying to study while life felt heavy. He shared that he had “too many things going on… physical health was bad, mental health was bad,” and he couldn’t break the cycle long enough to focus. What helped wasn’t a shortcut — it was structure and direction. “Power Engineering 101 helped me CONSOLIDATE… It helped me consolidate the syllabus. It gave me direction. It helped me to focus and it brought me to the table to study.” He also admitted that early on, he leaned heavily on emailing questions whenever he got stuck — but over time he “slowly had to re-learn how to learn,” and that’s where his momentum came from. Today, Seep has used our tutorial courses to pass his 3rd Class and complete his 2nd Class, and he’s now working as a Power Engineer in a 12MW biomass cogeneration plant — focused on getting better every day. Congrats Seep, we are grateful to be apart of your success.
2nd Class Success Story 🎉
Why so quiet?!
Hello! I"m currently working on my 2nd, but only have a couple of exams left. Does anyone have any advice for the 1st Class exams? I imagine they are more challenging, but in what way? How much is review and what exams should I tackle first? Well, I plan on going applied mechanics, while uts still fresh in my mind, but after that, which one should I do? Hope everyone is doing well!!!
📢 I’m proud to share that I have officially been awarded my 3rd Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency through ABSA.
This milestone is a reflection of years (2006 start) of dedication, resilience, and hands-on experience in Canada’s energy sector. Over the most recent several years, I’ve had the privilege to contribute to some dynamic projects, including: 🔹 Assistant Shift Engineer – Keyera Simonette Gas Plant Operating in a high-capacity midstream facility (450 MMcf/d sour gas & 27,000 bbl/d condensate), with responsibility for cryogenic and sour gas processing, amine & dehydration units, fractionation, compressors, and SCADA/DCS monitoring. Supporting safe operations, hazard mitigation, and contractor onboarding while optimizing plant performance. 🔹 Process Foreman – Sancon Commissioning (Pembina Brownfield Upgrade) Leading commissioning and startup activities, mechanical isolations, permit-to-work processes, lockout/tagout procedures, and SOP development. Ensuring safe turnover of systems and alignment with client standards during critical project phases. 🔹 Contract Operator – S2F Global Resources Supporting Strathcona’s HIP VAP R&D pilot for SAGD steam generation using produced water (GHG reduction & water treatment innovation). Additionally, operating AltaGas’ Townsend deepcut, shallow cut, and mercaptan plant (550 MMscf/d) with responsibility for isolations, inspections, and emergency readiness. These experiences have deepened my industry service commitments and further shaped me into a safety-first, technically versatile operator who thrives on collaboration, problem-solving, and continual learning. Looking ahead, I am already actively pursuing my 2nd Class certification with study materials in hand and initial program underway in the Power Engineering 101 modules. This certification is not the finish line; it’s a steppingstone toward continued professional growth and contribution to Western Canada's power and natural gas industry.
Finished 3rd class
Finally finished my 3rd class. I crushed the last 2 exams 2 weeks apart. The hardest exam for me was A1. half of my exam was thermodynamics and some of the calculations were very challenging. After 14 months finally got it. There were some lulls and contemplation whether or not I was gonna get it done. Thanks for all the support I have received from here. I really want to thank the team at power engineering 101. The practice exams played a huge role in my success. I found them very helpful. I wish every the best of luck on their journey in power engineering as I start my journey to my second class -Mike
