Ok. I’m already sideways with the paint mixing. My colors are not turning out. And I don’t think I’ve used enough paint. Although I think I got more pain on my hands and I did on the pallet. I’ll assume bathing in the mineral spirits was how I was supposed to get it off of me. I’ve used half the jar of white and still can’t get the light blue. I got a bright blue but not a light blue. I have not added any black because that’s a lot of paint to screw up. Don’t even get me started on the pallet knife, and the amount of paint I wasted with that thing. I’m a mess the pallet is now in the freezer.

I can tell you that it isn’t that shit that Ms Grimes did to me in my college art classes. 😡 A critique does NOT include public humiliation or beating yourself up. It is simply a way to evaluate the painting and decide what to do next. I ALWAYS critique my own work in between every layer of paint. I try HARD not to mentally do it during the painting process however. That is when I repeat the statement “Trust the Process”. Here are the questions I ask. 1. What is one thing that you like about what you see? 2. Is the emotion being communicated? (In this case, calm, peaceful, relaxed and happy.) 3. Are proportions believable? (Is the drawing correct?) 4. Compare the reference and painting. Where do you see the biggest color difference? 5. Are the VALUES correct? (How dark or light something is.) 6. What is one thing that you would change? Can you answer these questions for me? Ps - there is no right or wrong answer here. This is simply an exercise of evaluation and interpretation. Everyone has a unique and different perspective and it’s SUPER important to embrace that. Professional artists don’t paint perfect paintings. They paint, evaluate, make changes and keep going. I’ve been designing chocolate bar wrappers for my kids theatre productions of High School Musical and the first Wildcat face is what Chat gave me on the very first wrapper it designed! Everybody I show it to, absolutely loves it!! Yesterday I showed it to the lead set designer and he said he would LOVE to be able to paint it into the center of the gym floor they just built but the main artist in charge of painting has said she can’t paint the wildcat he designed and while this one is fabulous, he needs to get the face painted with just his artistic ability…. And he doesn’t think he could reproduce the 3D effect. So I simplified it to the second image but that one doesn’t grab his fancy like the first one does and right now he’s not interested in trying cause it’s still pretty detailed. I’m thinking with your grid method MAYBE I might be able to blow it up to size and paint it myself… But it would need to use fast drying paint because the sets travel to the theatre on Friday. Which means I would need to practice it, paint it small, show I can enlarge it and have the time to actually paint it and have the paint dry by Friday… On top of everything else I need to do this week for my community and theatre… I know you can’t tell me if I can fit it in, but I am wondering if you could estimate how quickly I could do this specific project from practice paint - I’m thinking one small and then one larger but not full scale size so I can show proof that I can make it look exactly like the graphic. The actual painting needs to be 4x4 and painted on a plywood floor and be dry by Friday. I’m not positive when the floor would be available for me to paint but I’m thinking maybe Wednesday and would confirm if you can even guesstimate time to complete - I’m not a complete beginner and I am pretty good at seeing small details so can already visualize the different sections :) AND would I be able to buy specific paint colours to do this without colour mixing? The paint needs to be able to withstand High School Musical dancing so that the set stays fresh and protected from when we move into the theatre on Sunday, all the way through 8 shows til the final show on Saturday evening….
