Deciding where to paint
You don't have to overthink this part. 🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟 🫟 🫟 Look for good natural lighting. Near a window is great! 🫟 About 3 sq. ft. of space. You don't need a lot. 🫟 Put an old towel down to protect the surface. 🫟 If you don't have an easel: 🫟 Prop up the canvas with a box behind it. 🫟 It's ok to paint flat on the table. 🫟 🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟 Drop a pick of your painting space below:

Ha! After talking about water and paint colours I’m embarrassed to show how dirty I let mine get without changing it!

@Michelle Cyr this is an older photo and wasn’t taken with the light in mind but there’s two windows beside the table and I have a feeling only one was open. With both open the light’s awesome :)
What do you feel in this painting?
I was scrolling thru some of my favorite artists in Instagram and WOW, this one stopped my scrolling. What do you notice about this painting? Do you love it, or not so much? What do you notice about the colors? The artist is Elena Wuest and I am so in love with her work!!!!!

I actually love it! I wouldn’t have said that at first glance if you hadn’t asked and would probably have just scrolled on by but looking closer, I love that it looks like a photo. I love the sun creating the shadowy leaves. I love the teapot and the cup. I wanna be like this artist when I grow up!!!
⏺️⏺️⏺️. RECORDING complete!
Yesterday, we went LIVE! We learned: 🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟 🫟 🫟 What to paint on. 🫟 What brushes to use. 🫟 What other supplies we need 🫟 and 3 ways to get our sketch onto our painting surface. 🫟 🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟 Next week we will BUST OPEN THE PAINT TUBES!!! This was SOOOO well attended this week and I am doing a little editing on the video but not much. It's not perfect but it's a lot better. I am hoping to upload this into Tonight HERE. 🔥. I have a burning question for those of you who attended this week, 🔥🔥. how comfortable do you feel about getting your image onto your canvas? 🔥🔥🔥. If you don't have confidence, I have something to improve. 📹📹📹📹. I am doing a little editing to the video (not much though). 📹📹📹. I want this to be great information for you. 📹📹. I would REALLY love any feedback you have. 📹. Please don't be bashful. Do you have any improvements I can make to make your experience even better? What didn't work for you? I am really looking for open and honest feedback.

@Janice Peterson and @Michelle Cyr thank you!
Paint Brand matters because of THIS
Artists, by nature, are conservative spenders. I tremendously value this! Each brand of paint has a unique formula that consists of basically 2 or 3 things. 🌟🌟🌟. PIGMENT 🪣🪣. CARRIER 👽. FILLER Those 👽👽👽 (fillers) can sabotage your painting in 30 seconds if you don't gain the knowledge. Dull color Mud Weird Texture And you might think that it's your technique that is the problem. _______________ So here's what we do. 1. Learn how to work with what you have already. 2. Don't panic and buy new. 3. Upgrade to better quality paint BUT ONLY WHEN your existing tube is gone. FOR CANADA STUDENTS - Here is a list from Michaels.ca Winsor Newton WINTON oil paints - these are the EXACT paints I teach with. These are student paints with a good quality. You can buy one tube at a time. Gamblin 1980 - these are a GREAT option - maybe even a little higher quality than WINTON. You can go for these when you want to really start selling your work. Gamsol - for cleaning brushes DO NOT BUY -Anything that says "Water Soluble" - they will not mix or behave the same way at all! -Anything that says "substitute" - this will leave waxy residue. Guessing with paint is expensive… and frustrating 😆 This is a 1:1 session. Make your Paints Predictable HERE.

Ah! I love you! Thank you so much for thinking about us Canadians!! My red and black were what really jumped out at you as being way off from what we are using - the water mixable magenta is all that was available from Winson & Newton but I know it was available in the 1980 - you’re sure it’s not worth getting a proper tube of that colour?

@Michelle Cyr thank you :) I did buy ivory black last night as well - they also had lamp black but I thought I remembered you talking about ivory black…
Armchair QB of yesterday's class
Several of you showed up for the first class of painting Hometown Dreams @Kate Bullock original image. I appreciate that more than you know. I'm going to be upfront- 🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟 🫟 🫟 🎯 I WILL DO BETTER! 🎯 🫟 🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟🫟 We are moving to Zoom - I tested Skool with optimism but it just didn't deliver the quality I expect for you. 😵‍💫 I was so flustered 👩‍💻👩‍💻 tech didn't cooperate ⏺️⏺️⏺️ I forgot to hit the Record Not happening again. ❓❓❓ But the questions and input were great! 🧑‍🤝‍🧑🧑‍🤝‍🧑. The interaction was fabulous! 👍🏻 The value was there. I’ve already added a few things to the classroom today: updates for Canadian students on mineral spirits and I’ll be adding lighting (can’t believe I skipped that 😆) 🎯 We’re building this together ⏰⏰ in real time 💬💬💬 I want your feedback. What could I make better for you? What worked and what didn’t? I am asking for full open and honest. No need to be sugary.
