The Power of Giving Yourself to Something: Purpose as the Path to Joy
This weekend I was thinking about the idea of giving yourself to something. Not in some grand, sweeping way, but in the small, intentional ways that change my mindset and, honestly, has changed my life.
Here’s what I’ve discovered: Something out there needs us. Maybe it’s a plant sitting in a corner, a pet waiting by the door, or even a fish swimming around its tank. Many of us have a world full of people, but for them, we are their world. That’s not something to take lightly.
Seventeen years ago, I made a commitment to Scruffy, this scrappy little pup who had been abandoned and needed someone. I didn’t know then what I was signing up for, and there have been times—oh, there have been times—when it’s been tough. He keeps me up at night sometimes. He often has me hopping during the day cleaning up puppy poo, playing, feeding, medicating. But every single effort is worth it because I know I’m making a difference in his life. And here’s the kicker: The difference he’s made in mine is hard to describe.
Caring for something else pulls you out of yourself. It grounds you. It reminds you that you matter—not in some abstract, self-help-book way, but because your care makes a real impact.
There’s another angle to this: You can give yourself to routines, too. Little things that make your corner of the world better. Making your bed in the morning. Washing the dishes instead of letting them pile up. Organizing that drawer you’ve been avoiding. It might seem trivial, but those actions shift something in your mind.
Make your mantra, “This space, this moment, this life matters.”
Your life is a garden. You can’t just let it grow wild and hope for the best. You have to tend it. Pull the weeds. Plant seeds of time and energy. Water it with care and attention. The more you give to it, the more it gives back to you.
Here’s the truth I’ve learned: Purpose isn’t about chasing some big dream or grand success. It’s in the little commitments we make every single day. It’s the quiet, steady giving of yourself to something—something that grows because of you. And when you do that, joy has a way of finding you.
Now, let me ask you this:
• Is there something—or someone—you can give yourself to right now?
• Is there a corner of your life that could bloom with just a little more attention?
(Let’s share in the comments & support each other)
Start there. Start small. And watch what happens.
Your existence is your garden. Tend it well, and you’ll reap a life of purpose—and joy.
