The Still Life on the Bar . More Than Just Drinks
The Hidden Meaning of the Bottles and Oranges.
Today, we focus on the still life—the objects on the marble counter right in front of us.
The Expensive Drinks
The bar is full of beautiful, clearly painted bottles. Manet painted them very carefully to show their shine and texture.
We can easily recognize famous brands like Bass Pale Ale (the red triangle label) and bottles of Champagne.
Suzon's golden bracelet also echoes the champagne bottles, a symbol of celebration.
There are also a few bottles of beer; the middle class is also welcome.
The expensive goods. tell us that the customers at the Folies Bergère are rich and the place is very luxurious.
The drinks represent pleasure and consumption.
The Meaning of the Oranges
Look at the bowl of oranges on the left. Why are they so important?
Oranges were exotic and expensive in Paris , at this time . They symbolize luxury and desire.
More importantly, Manet places the oranges right next to Suzon. This creates a powerful link.
The complementary color to orange is blue, Manet painted here to drive the eye of the viewer directly ono Suzon's jacket ,
Along with the bottles, the oranges show that everything on the counter is a product for sale, even Suzon herself. It's a subtle way to show that she is also on display and available to be admired or consumed. Like a sweet fruit !
The bouquet of flowers on the counter echoes the flowers on Suzon's dress symbolizing her freshness .
Another detail : One could say that the triangle formed by Suzon's grey skirt, in synergy with the marble counter, seems to guide our gaze towards this central point.
Suzon's hands resting on the counter; she is part of the still lifes. (immobility and passivity)
Manet’s Genius
By painting these objects so realistic and placing them next to Suzon, Manet does two things:
He proves he is also a master of the still life genre.
He makes a social comment: he connects high society’s pleasure (the Champagne) with the silent labor of the working woman (Suzon).
