Iconic Movie Scenes: Fargo (1996)
Alright, so Joel and Ethan Coen, those filmmaking bros, totally nailed it with this dark comedy-thriller that’s got a big ol’ slice of Minnesotan charm. Fargo scored seven Oscar wins, including Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Frances McDormand kills it as Marge Gunderson, this super-pregnant small-town police chief who’s all sweet and folksy on the outside, yet really sharp when it comes to solving crimes.
So here’s the deal: Jerry Lundegaard (played by William H. Macy), a car salesman who’s struggling with debt and is under the control of his wealthy, overbearing father-in-law, Wade, comes up with a plan to make some quick money. He hires two total knuckleheads, Carl (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear (Peter Stormare), to kidnap his wife and demand a ransom from Wade. But, as you might expect, things quickly go wrong. Bodies start piling up, and Marge, with her large baby bump and a strong craving for all-you-can-eat buffets, starts putting together the pieces of the puzzle.
The Coens start off by claiming the movie is ‘based on a true story,’ but in reality, it’s all made up. Actually, that movie is a helluva dark comedy from the Coens that’s become one of my all-time favorites.
