How to do listening lessons more effectively?

I've tried to do the first free listening lesson. It was tough to fill the gaps in the script. I've listened to the audio, maybe, 60 times, spent 2 hours, I did a pause after few words, repeated it again and again, tried to determine and write the text word by word. I used an earphones with the noise cancellation to no noice can distract me. I know, It's just a process of learning English (and that audio was about trying many times to be successful, hehe), but maybe are there some tricks that could make the study more effective? Maybe slow down the payback speed or something else.
