How to develop the ability to learn independently

Nowadays , I have a cold. So I always want to sleep. Ten hours of sleep is not enough for me.

Today, when I prepare to go home, a student's father walks through the classroom. And he expressed his opinion about how to develop the ability to learn independently.He hoped that I could guide his child to master this ability through this month of study. Actually ,before that I used to teaching Grade Three Four Five Six Seven Eight Nine. It's my first time to teach Grade One. These two teaching methods are totally different. So I spent much more time on learning .How to teach. How to express. How to think like a child.

But this question is tough for me. I have no idea.
