I’m an ordinary middle-aged woman living in Korea.
I’ve been working since graduating from college, but I’ve never shaken hands with anyone in my entire life.
I usually greet people by slightly bowing my head.
That’s how things are done here.
I asked my husband whether he shakes hands.
He said men do shake hands because of business.
Then he added something more: he shakes hands only as a representative.
For example, in a business meeting with three people on each side,
only the leaders shake hands with each other.
Everyone else simply bows.
I asked my daughter, too.
She’s a college student, and she has never shaken hands either.
I asked her,
“What if one of my friends from abroad asks you to shake hands?”
She said she would bow first, but if the person held out their hand,
she might hesitate for a moment—and then shake it.
After that, I found myself thinking:When was the last time I touched someone else’s hand?
