English Expressions - Laughing Stock
What does "laughing stock" mean?
Imagine someone does something so ridiculous or fails so badly that everyone just can’t stop laughing at them. That person (or thing) becomes the "laughing stock"—basically, it's like being the punching bag of humor!
Origin:
The phrase comes from the old meaning of "stock" (a trunk or post), where people would be publicly mocked or punished (like in the stocks used for public humiliation in medieval times). Over time, it evolved to mean someone who is widely ridiculed.
Why Do Things Become a Laughing Stock?
  • Epic fails (like a celebrity’s awkward moment going viral)
  • Repeated bad decisions (like a company that keeps releasing terrible products)
  • Just being weird in a funny way (like a bizarre fashion trend)
Basically, if people can’t stop roasting it… it’s a laughing stock. 😆
