Are We Human… or Are We Dancer?

One of The Killers’ biggest anthems, and still a brain-scrambler in the best way. The famous line was inspired by a quote from Hunter S. Thompson, and it hits harder the more you think about it.

At its core, this song is about identity and pressure — are we living as real individuals, or just moving on autopilot, doing what we’re expected to do? It’s full of energy, doubt, emotion, and that uneasy feeling of trying to figure yourself out in a loud world.

The song asks: Are we free, or are we subjects of society? “Human” means we can act freely, while “dancer” refers to a puppet dancing on strings — someone else moving you where they want, thinking for you, and making your life a planned routine. If you listen to the other lyrics, you’ll see that “dancer” is indeed a puppet. “Cut the cord” or “let us be free” is essentially what Brandon Flowers is saying.
