Reciprocity: The Missing Language of Liberty
Most political discussions treat liberty and the collective good as competing forces—more of one means less of the other. That framing misses how human systems actually work. Liberty isn’t sustained by isolation, but by reciprocity.
Moral action is rarely purely selfish or purely altruistic. It is usually an exchange: care given and care received. Families, partnerships, communities, and even markets function because mutual responsibility strengthens individual freedom rather than limiting it.
If liberty and collective good reinforce each other, why do we keep treating them as opposites in politics?
