Do you ever enjoy being around people but then feel completely wiped out afterwards?
With the holidays coming up, it’s worth knowing your limits before the overload hits.
I love socialising and spending time with family, but as someone who’s neurodivergent, I hit my “that’s enough” point fast. I can have the best day, and then suddenly my brain and body shut down and I need quiet. Not because anything is wrong, just because my system is full.
And honestly, this happens to many people, not just those of us with ADHD or autism traits. We ignore the early signs, push through, and then wonder why we’re snappy, exhausted, or overwhelmed.
Here’s what actually helps me reset:
• A soft landing when I get home
Comfy clothes, low lights, warm drink, no talking for a bit.
• Five minutes of quiet
Hand on chest, slow breathing, or just staring out the window and letting my body settle.
• Reducing the noise
Soft music, no screens, no notifications. Scrolling does not reset you.
• Cosy sensory input
Blankets, cushions, soft textures. My nervous system loves anything warm and snug.
• Letting myself step away
Sometimes the kindest thing is saying, “I just need 20 minutes.”It isn’t rude. It’s maintenance.
The truth is that even when the socialising is lovely, the recovery still matters.
Your system needs space to process before it can show up again.
If you get overstimulated too, what helps you reset?
