The True Scoreboard: A Speech for Grassroots Football
Something to remember
"Next time you play, look around the pitch. What do you see?
If you’re looking for a scoreboard or a shiny trophy at the end of the day, you’re missing the most important part of why we are here.
In grassroots football, it is so easy to get caught up in who scored the most goals or who won the league. But those things are just numbers on a page. They don’t tell the real story of what happened out there.
True success isn't something you can hold in your hands; it’s something you feel in your heart. Success is the smile on a player's face when they make a save. It’s the courage it takes for a shy child to step onto the grass and feel like they finally belong.
It’s the resilience to get back up after a goal or a save, and the kindness to reach out a hand and help a teammate—or an opponent—back up with you.
As Coaches our goal isn't to find the next superstar; it’s to make sure that every single child who puts on a shirt feels like they have a home here. We measure our season not by the points we’ve earned, but by the friendships we’ve built. We measure it by the player who didn't want to play in September but can’t wait for training in May.
We are building more than just Goal Keepers; we are building people with confidence, strength and spirit. When we make this game inclusive—where every background, every ability, and every child is celebrated—we aren't just playing a sport. We are creating a community where everyone wins.
So remember, don't play for the score. Play for the love of the game. Play for each other. Because when you walk off that pitch with a smile, knowing you gave your best and supported your team, you’ve already won the biggest trophy there is."
