Goalkeeper as captain – what do you think?
From my point of view, one of the main roles of a captain on the pitch is to be the one who can speak to the referee — let’s say manage conversations, put a bit of pressure, or question decisions when needed. After all, he’s the only “authorized” player to do it.
Because of that, I find it difficult for a goalkeeper to fully take on that role, simply because we’re usually too far away from the referee during most situations.
That’s why I see the goalkeeper more as a “captain without the armband” — leading the team mainly through communication, organization and presence, both on and off the pitch, even without wearing it.
In fact, I’ve personally turned down the armband for this reason. And to be honest, I’ve even felt frustrated when it’s been given (sometimes just based on seniority) to someone who then doesn’t take responsibility with the referee — I could have done the same from between the posts.
For younger players, though, it’s a different story. Being captain is a big motivation for them, and the referee interaction side isn’t as important — so in that case, it makes perfect sense.
What do you think? Looking forward to your thoughts.
