Advice For Keepers - What To Work On
I lot of people are asking for ideas, advice or things to work on for Trials, 1-2-1's, Training Ideas or just want to improve the weaknesses.
Technical Skills
  • Handling: Master clean catching, smothering low balls, and tipping over the bar.
  • Footwork: Develop fast, short shuffling steps to shift across the goal line quickly.
  • Shot Stopping: Practice diving techniques, focusing on correct hand placement and safe landing.
  • Crosses: Learn to judge flight paths, command the six-yard box, and punch or catch.
  • Distribution: Build accuracy in short ground passing, long driven clearances, and hand throws.
Tactical Awareness
  • Positioning: Understand angles relative to the ball, moving down the imaginary centre line.
  • Decision Making: Know when to stay on the line versus when to rush out.
  • Commanding: Lead the defence by shouting clear, loud instructions during set pieces and open play.
  • Sweeper Keeper: Learn to play high outside the penalty box to clear long through-balls.
Physical Conditioning
  • Explosive Power: Focus on plyometrics like jump squats and bounding to improve diving height.
  • Agility: Use ladder drills and cone work to change direction in fractions of a second.
  • Core Strength: Build a strong trunk to maintain balance in mid-air and absorb impacts.
  • Flexibility: Stretch hip flexors and hamstrings to prevent injury and extend diving reach.
Mental Toughness
  • Bounce-Back: Develop the resilience to forget mistakes instantly and stay focused during games.
  • Concentration: Maintain intense focus even when your team is dominating possession far away.
  • Courage: Build bravery for 1v1 situations where you must dive at a striker's feet.
