How our emotions guide our lives ?
We so often think of life as a straightforward path. We can rationally process the world and make decisions in a logical, measured way, right?
But scientific research and our own experiences suggest that our lives are governed far more by emotion than by a rational analysis of the facts. This is exactly what neuroscientists, psychologists, and behaviorists have been saying for decades. In essence, we are governed by emotions.
The role of emotions
The importance of emotions has been solidified in the findings of science. We need to recognize that emotional decisions are powerful decision-making tools. According to neuroscience research, our emotions can override our reasoning and can form the basis of important decision-making. In other words, when we make decisions, our feelings – and not our rationales – are the ones that will ultimately determine the course of our lives.
This can be seen in everyday decisions like whether or not to purchase a certain item, or to move to a different city. But it can also be seen in the far-reaching decisions we make to build relationships, or to take a chance on a career path.
The benefits of emotional decision-making
Emotional decision-making has several benefits. First, it helps us make our decisions more quickly. We are generally able to sense and respond to our emotions better than we can to our rational thought processes. This allows us to make decisions without having to invest too much time and energy in the process.
Second, it gives us greater confidence in our decisions. When we make decisions based on our emotional states, we are more likely to trust our judgment and go through with them. This is especially useful for more complex, long-term decisions, like whether or not to start a business or invest in a property.
How to leverage emotional decision-making ?
Given that emotions play such an important role in our decisions, it is important to learn how to leverage our emotions to make better decisions. Here are a few tips:
  • Take your time. Allow yourself time to think and to take stock of your emotions. Process your feelings before you make a decision.
  • Tune in to your thoughts and feelings. Ask yourself questions like, “What am I feeling right now?” and “What does it tell me about this situation?”
  • Consider all angles. Think carefully about the pros and cons and all possible outcomes of each option.
  • Take breaks. Sometimes taking a step back can help us see the situation more clearly.
By leveraging our emotions and using them to our advantage, we can make more informed decisions and direct our lives in a more fulfilling way.
