Back in 2021 a guy signed up to my email list.
I got a notification about it as I do for all new signups.
I checked the name. Jack.
The last name sounded familiar.
I double checked.
Yep. It was a young guy, the same Jack who had started working recently for Rich Schefren as a copywriter.
Rich had mentioned Jack on a livestream a few times, and said he's going to be a big name one day.
So I sent Jack a 1-on-1 email that said:

Hi Jack,
I saw you signed up to my newsletter today.
I normally do a bit of detective work to find out who a new subscriber is, but I knew your name already. Rich Schefren talked you up on a recent livestream and said you are going to be a big name in the industry.
What are you working on these days?

Jack replied.
We exchanged a few more emails. Then we got on a call and I guess talked copywriting.
Fine. Fast forward a few weeks.
Jack was reading one of my emails. He remembered something we had talked about on the call.
He looked up one of my older emails, which talked about Rich Schefren and Mark Ford.
He sent this email to Rich.
Rich liked the email. He forwarded the email to Mark Ford.
Mark ended up signing up to my list as a result of all this.
Over the next few weeks, Mark forwarded some of my emails to people in his circle.
In case you don't know Mark, he's one of the guys who built up Agora into the biggest direct response info publisher out there.
His "circle" is made up of hundreds or maybe thousands of the world's best marketers and copywriters.
Many of them ended up signing up to my list because Mark recommended me to them... because Rich recommended me to Mark... because Jack recommended me to Rich... because Jack and I got on a call... because I wrote Jack a one-to-one email, which started a conversation.
*** Magic List-Growing Secret #2 That Big Email Doesn't Want You To Know: Interacting with people who join my list or are already on my list ***
I've done this over and over and over.
People sign up to my list.
I spend a couple minutes to do some detective work.
If I can figure out anything interesting about them, I write them an email.
Or if I send out a broadcast email to my whole list, and somebody responds, I engage them in conversation. "What's your story? What are you working?"
Or if they buy my course, and I don't know them, I ask them who they are, what made them do it.
Yes, it's good for market research. But it also starts conversations, some of which open up whole new vistas.
In my experience, growing my list feels like playing Minesweeper.
Sometimes you click on a box in Minesweeper, and it just shows 1 and gives you no further information.
But sometimes you click and 20 other fields open up.
You never know.
My solution is just to keep clicking and writing emails and interacting with people and seeing where it leads.
Over time, it translates into progress that I couldn't have imagined had I tried.
