While writing up the post about list growth via podcasts, I dug up the email I had sent to Chase Dimond that opened up the conversation that ended with me getting on his podcast. You can see the email thread below.
1. I replied to Chase's broadcast email instead of writing to him cold
2. I also referenced a recent episode he had done (with Daniel Throssell), which was how I had found him
3. I then came out with my offer, positioned in a way that was valuable to him ("folks who listen to your podcast could get value from a topic I could share")
4. I was respectful/deferential ("I'm not sure if you're taking on random guests like myself")
5. I then built up my credibility by explaining who I am, again in terms that are relevant to him ("copywriter and marketer who works with ecommerce brands" — Chase runs an ecommerce podcast and agency)
6. I ended with a small ask — would he be open to hearing out my idea for a podcast episode?
Chase replied to say he's open to hearing me out.
I explained my idea for the podcast in another email.
It sounded good to him, and so we agreed on a time. Another small cold outreach success.
Point being, you really don't have to say all that much if you:
- Get really specific on who you're writing to
- Phrase your message to communicate that you're writing to them specifically,
- Don't force them to immediately dismiss you.
