The answer to your questions...
Hey Copywriting Launchpad!
Recently, I gave everyone on the copywriting.org email list an opportunity to Ask Me Anything…
As I went through the many replies, I realised so many copywriters right here in Launchpad share the same questions.Enjoy! ⤵️
“How do I get good at copywriting? “
If you want to get good enough to confidently offer your services and charge premium rates, you need to do three things.
First, find good copy to study it. Break it down into structures that you can use again and again. And if you’re struggling, then ask yourself “what are they doing in this section, and why?”
This way you will keep building a deep understanding of the craft.
Focus less on research, and more on breaking down WHY copy works so you can replicate.
(I’ve already built this for you in Copy Systems™ where hundreds of copywriters are enjoying clear systems to write every type of copy. But you can also just do it yourself.)
Second, take action aggressively. Copywriting is like any other high-paid skill - it's not easy. Anyone who told you it’s easy, needed to sell you their course.
You need to put the reps in. There's no shortcut around this. Also go out there and offer your services.
The best way to get better is to do some actual work for a business.
Third, get a mentor. Someone who can chief your copy, show you where to improve, and expose your blind spots.
A good mentor can solve a problem for you in a single conversation which might take you months to figure out on your own.
“How do I land my first client?”
If you're asking this, you're right at the beginning of your copywriting career. The good news is you don't need to be a master to start landing clients.
You just need to get good enough at one type of in-demand copy so you can deliver quality work consistently. So make sure you’re showing up like a pro with a clean CV & portfolio, professional looking profile pic, plus a clean appearance and audio when on calls.
Then identify what sort of business owners you want to work with, figure out where they go to find copywriters, and reach out to them and their team directly (I share the best way to do this below.)
“When am I good enough to land a client?”
If you're studying hard, practicing daily, and getting feedback from a mentor — you shouldn't wait long before closing a client.
Learning on-the-job is the best way to get good fast. But you need skills to offer first. So make sure you're a competent copywriter in at least one area before you start reaching out.
“How do I land clients when I have no results?”
Simple, do what I told you in question one - get good, practice hard. And as you get feedback, pick out a few of your best pieces of copy to start building your portfolio.
A good portfolio will get you in the door, then you can start generating results.
“What’s the best way to do outreach?”
The best outreach strategy is the one you can stick to and you can get data to improve.
The worst one is the one you hate and also the one where you have no idea if you’re making progress or not.
Right here in Copywriting Launchpad you can find plenty of resources on this topic.
Don’t expect to send 1 message and immediately land a client. Outreach only works when you do the work! The quickest way to land a client is to get good, show up like a pro and outreach consistently.
(I highly recommend you go through all the valuable content on client-getting in this program - this stuff shouldn’t be free, take advantage of it)
“How do I handle myself on calls?”
Before presenting any plan-of-action to them… ask questions.Get curious about their business and get clear on the exact problem you’re solving for them. This takes tons of pressure off you and you quickly identify exactly how you’re gonna generate wins for them. I have videos on sales calls on my YouTube channel too:
“How can I deliver consistently?”
By now, you already know the answer lolll. If you wanna consistently deliver great copy - you need to write a lot. No “secret” can replace consistent practice.
“Should I use AI?”
It depends on you and it depends on your copy. Many of the Dojo copywriters making $10k-$50k/mo with Creative Strategy use AI, but they can also ALL write without it.
And many equally great copywriters I know prefer not to use AI very much.
Personally I just prefer writing everything myself. I’m a bit old school.
AI is a powerful tool but it’s not a copywriter, if you’re using AI to do your writing AND your thinking, you become easily replaceable - anyone can use AI and you never learn the skill yourself.
Use it - but don’t stop using your own brain ;)
In your corner,
Matthew Volkwyn
