Can shorts hurt your YouTube channel?

I’ve gone through a couple phases of publishing a lot of shorts on my YouTube channel.

Each time the shorts didn’t do much for the channel AND views on my long form videos (published after the shorts) went down.

I’m not sure if this was caused by the shorts or not.

The gurus seem split as to whether shorts are good for channels.

Have any of you had a good experience with YouTube shorts?
