There are different types of dog people!
I’ve noticed a few distinct “dog-person types” that keep repeating, and I think the type you are shapes the kind of dog you bond with (and the kind of dog you struggle with).
These are four types I’ve identified so far (definitely not exhaustive):
1) The Nervous-System Reader
You don’t just train behaviour, you read state. You notice thresholds, micro-signals, recovery time. You’re more interested in regulation than control.
2) The Devotee / The Belonger
Your dog is not a pet. Your dog is kin. You organise your life around them without resentment. You’re deeply relational, often fiercely loyal, and you take responsibility seriously.
3) The Structure Builder
You love dogs, but you love clarity even more. You’re consistent, boundary-forward, and you feel most connected when you and your dog have a shared system (routines, cues, expectations).
4) The Romantic Chaos Gremlin
You like wildness. You’re not scared of “too much dog.” You thrive in the mess of personality, spontaneity, big feelings and big play. You sometimes underestimate how quickly chaos becomes dysregulation.
This list isn’t exhaustive at all.
If none of these fit, describe your dog-person type in the comments (one sentence), and describe your dog in one sentence too.
