This morning, as part of the business coaching I belong to, I was challenged to write my WHY, and I was asked if my actions were in alignment to my WHY.
I like this question, because it is a deep seated reason for why we are in business. If all we want from our business is money, then you are likely to feel fulfilled by your tasks each day. I also think that when the days get tough (which they will sometimes), your WHY is what keeps you going. When you have something bigger than yourself to build, hard days become less of an issue.
So, the questions were :
1. Your current WHY…. the real reason you’re building this business right now.
2. One shift you need to make this week to realign your actions with that WHY.
Here are my answers :
1. Your current WHY…. the real reason you’re building this business right now.
At the surface level, my WHY is about financial and time freedom. I want to be able to work from home, so that I can be available for my grandchildren. Attend their school sports days, be able to take them for experiences, all the good stuff.
At a deeper level, my WHY is about Legacy Through Leadership. I believe true legacy is about WHO you leave behind, not WHAT you leave behind. You can leave your children with an inheritance (money or a business are the most common ideas of legacy that I see around the place), but if they don't have financial maturity, they will spend the money. If they don't want to run your business when you're gone, they will run it into the ground, or sell it. So, true legacy for me is WHO you leave behind - strong, resilient, compassionate leaders who are making the world a better place.
I want my grandchildren to be confident in who they are and what value they bring to the world. I want them to have an entrepreneurial mindset even if they are working as an employee. I want them to have grit and determination and for them to have a purpose to their lives. That's WHO I want to leave behind as my legacy. Not money - knowledge, ability and drive.
And - I want the same for the men who join my community.
Legacy Through Leadership. Being an excellent role model for the next generations. They then pass on the same skills and attributes to their own children and grandchildren.
That's Legacy.
2. One shift you need to make this week to realign your actions with that WHY.
The biggest shift I need to make is to become consistent having conversations with people. I have not been very good at talking to people about what I want to do. I have struggled with imposter syndrome and perfectionism for a long time, so I need to stop that.
I can't achieve my goal without having a bunch of great guys coming along for the ride. For that to happen, I have to talk about what I am doing and I have to make connections with the men who want what I want.
So, that's the big shift I need to make. I need to become visible and I need to become available. I need to step up - because if I don't, how can I expect the men I want to work with to do so?
Finally - are my actions still aligned with why I started this whole thing in the first place?
No.
But I am getting better at it slowly.
Thanks for the assignment.

If you're a man aged 40 plus, who has been doing all of the "right" things for years - go to work, work all day, come home, do chores around the house, look after your children, have dinner, maybe watch a bit of TV, then go to bed - and then do it all over again the next day...
If you've ever sat up one day and wondered "where did the last ten years go?"....
If you're ready to take responsibility for your results and ready to make some changes...
If you're worried that the next ten years could race by without you getting any closer to your dreams and goals, then come and check out my community - Midlife Misfit Brotherhood. It's for those of us who are done with drifting through life - now it's time to do something for ourselves - without burning down everything you have built.
