I hear this ALL the time: 'My kid won't do breathing exercises.'
What I've learned over the years is that traditional 'take a deep breath' advice fails because we're asking kids to do the WRONG kind of breathing.
❌ Deep breathing when dysregulated = more agitation
✅ Exhale-focused breathing = actual calm
The secret? Make the exhale LONGER than the inhale (like 4-8 pattern). This activates the parasympathetic nervous system.
Try it yourself right now: In for 4, out for 8. Repeat 3 times.
Feel different? That's pretty cool science.
