See previous posts for context but the wind has kept the serious “Devil’s Underpants” temperatures at bay so I was itching to try some of my new targets. I got a couple of giant tennis balls and a cheap soccer ball for some kick around blunt practice. I just used the soccer ball today. Even seriously deflated and at 10ish yards with a 35# bow I might have to invest in a little better quality ball but we’ll see. Here is the really positive side. Every shot was center mass on the ball. I was trying to stay in the little shade I had left in the yard so I repositioned every time but I could easily see the fun in just chasing the ball all over the yard. The real light bulb moment was how similar this exercise is to how my family has prepared for rifle hunting in the western US. We hand load and once we have a decent load (read that 1” or less at 100 yards) we get off the bench and only shoot at an 8” metal gong at varying distances and shooting positions. We don’t worry about turning 1” groups into 3/4” groups. We use the gong to determine effective range under field conditions and that range might be different sitting vs prone. Using the ball really linked to that for me. Will definitely be working it into my shooting sessions.
