A week ago I shot a fat 5 point whitetail buck- 18 yards through the heart with a Damon Howatt Hi Speed- a bow that was made in 1972 when I was around 4 years old. It’s the 9th whitetail I’ve taken with that vintage bow since I refinished it 9 years ago and with Muzzle loader seasons kicking off all week it was great to put some venison away. Shout out to @Kris Kok for helping me hang it up -and coming out to assist! 👊 Our youngest daughter played 4 competitive hockey games yesterday- went to school all day and still wanted to come help dad out processing the deer. Tradition, heritage, bonding whatever it is- she’s now deeply connected to it all. This is the 4th whitetail she’s skinned herself and helped me put into the freezer. You will notice in my writing books and articles I referenced the process above all else- and frequently mention that hunting relationship I have with my kids. It’s my favorite part of the hunting experience for me now- yes it’s a task butchering but it seals the process for myself and kids as well. Accountability and the end state of hunting. Period.. the smile all says it all for me! Good luck to everyone out there still- and thank you for sharing your journey with traditional gear with our family as well! 🦌 🏹 No sights- No Problem - Grant

Raised both of my daughters in the woods hunting and fishing. They’re both grown and on their own now but those days were undoubtedly some of the best days of my life.

Frustrating bow hunt
Does anyone else get super frustrated with trad bow hunting. I was out all day today, stalking a pair of does and a nice big buck but could not get within shooting distance. So many 50-60 yard broadside opportunities, but I am not accurate after about 30-40 yards. Just really makes me hate this trad bow stuff. Anyone else?

@Brian Madigan It happens to all of us. I’d be willing to bet that there’s not a single hunter here that hasn’t experienced what you’re talking about. For me personally, I look for things that I CAN change to beat out the “insanity” within my hunting. I can’t change the behavior of the game I’m pursuing. I can’t change the weather. I can’t change what other hunters are doing. The only variable in this entire equation that I have any control over is me. That variable I AM entirely in control of. It may mean I change the areas I’m hunting. Or the hours I’m hunting. Or the game I’m hunting. My entrance into my hunting area. Hunt from the ground or from a tree on your next trip afield. Swap bows if you’re able. Maybe instead of hunting a transition zone between bedding and feeding areas, I push in a little closer to the bedding area in the mornings or the feeding areas in the evenings. Go in late instead of early. Do what you can to keep it fresh and fun. Little things can make a big difference. If it gets to be drudgery, then take a day off altogether. Or two, even. Carry a firearm one day if possible. My point being that you’re the only one who can do that for yourself. I’m hunting strictly on public ground this year. I’ve always had a piece of private ground secured to hunt on for as long as I can remember. To add to that, the majority of public ground I’m hunting isn’t open to hunting throughout the entirety of our season. I’m also carrying just my longbow afield this year. The odds are stacked against me, greatly. But I’m finding ways to keep things interesting. Keep your head down and best of luck to you.

Thank you, sir. It’s been a great day with family and friends!
Black bears
Got a question for you black bear hunters…so I got invited to go on a black bear hunt in about two more weeks. I’ve never hunted them before and have the opportunity to hunt them with a bow. The hunt will be over bait (which is legal) and from a blind of some sort. I’m wondering if my 64” Toelke Whip drawing 48# with 660 grain arrows is adequate? I’ve been studying over black bear anatomy and skeletal structure and I’m not seeing anything that makes me think that I need anything heavier. There again, I’ve never hunted them before. I do have a takedown recurve that’s drawing 54# and the arrows I use with it are right at 700 grains. Thanks in advance for your input and advice.

Thanks, Grant! One thing that I did read is that bears have a tendency to present some weird shots sometimes because of how “round” they look and the fact that they’ll often sit down on their rump like a dog does to scratch or maybe to rest, I guess. They say it can throw off a hunter’s perception of where the vitals actually are? Have you seen or heard of that?

Mid-50s bowhunter, started out with compounds like many archers do. Always loved trad archery and finally bought a “couple” trad bows recently.
