Raw Materials - Labdanum

Labdanum is a sticky, resinous substance derived from the Cistus ladanifer shrub, known for its deep, warm, and leathery scent, often used in perfumery as a base note in amber and oriental fragrances. Harvested primarily in the Mediterranean, the resin naturally exudes from the plant’s leaves and twigs in hot weather. Traditionally, labdanum was collected from the fur of goats and sheep grazing on the plants, but today it's harvested using combs or cloths. Once gathered, the resin is processed through steam distillation or solvent extraction to produce labdanum absolute or essential oil.

Labdanum is a cornerstone in men’s fragrances, prized for its warm, resinous, and leathery scent that adds depth and richness to colognes. Often used as a base note, it creates a foundation of warmth and complexity, blending seamlessly with woody, spicy, and smoky accords. Its amber-like qualities give a sense of sophistication and longevity, making it a popular choice in masculine oriental or chypre scent profiles. When I smell Labdanum: It hits with a deep, grounded warmth that feels rugged and rich. It’s got this leathery, almost smoky edge that’s both strong and smooth, like walking through an old forest after the rain. I also imagine old wood furniture in a consignment shop, not moldy no, more just aged, ahh, "matured". There’s a subtle sweetness beneath it all too, but nothing overpowering—it’s more of a dark, earthy, almost primal.
