Raw Materials - Geranium

Geranium is a flowering plant from the Pelargonium genus. Common names include rose geranium, sweet scented geranium, old fashion rose geranium, and rose-scent geranium. The essential oil, known as geranium oil, is distilled from the leaves and stems rather than the flowers. The production ratio of geranium (plant material to oil) is about 500 to 1. In fragrance compositions, geranium offers a crisp, floral note with hints of citrus and mint, making it a versatile ingredient that can be used in both masculine and feminine scents.

Geranium is a versatile ingredient in men’s fragrances, known for its fresh, green, and slightly spicy floral note that adds complexity and brightness. With crisp, herbaceous hints of mint and citrus, it balances heavier woody or spicy elements, offering a clean, sophisticated edge without being overly sweet. Often compared to rose but with a greener, more herbal quality, geranium is ideal for aromatic, fougère, and chypre fragrances, pairing well with notes like vetiver, cedarwood, and patchouli. Its uplifting scent is also valued in aromatherapy and serves as a more affordable alternative to rose oil.

When I smell Geranium: it has this invigorating freshness that's both green and a bit spicy, with a hint of mint and citrus. It’s like a brisk, herbal breeze with a subtle floral touch, not too sweet or delicate but definitely sophisticated. I find it adds a sharp, lively quality that keeps things interesting without being overwhelming. A note I find very enjoyable and in many favored fragrances in my collection! I commonly find it mixed with lavender and/or mint. Interestingly, I like fresh crushed geranium leaves between my fingers better than the distilled absolute I have here as a sample! Nothing beats freshness, that’s why I planted some outside earlier this year (background of second pic)!
