FRAG REVIEW - Amouage Royal Tobacco
Hey frag fam, Joe A. here! On Thanksgiving Day, we were able to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from our hotel room and then we traveled to the Brooklynn district to supper with my wife’s side of the family. Of course, they haven’t seen me in years, so I wanted to make a lasting impression. What better way to do that than with Amouage’s Opus XIV Royal Tobacco!
The nose behind Royal Tobacco is master perfumer Cecile Zarokian, who’s credited with at least 75 different fragrances from a variety of houses including Electimuss, Jacques Fath, MDCI and Nishane, as well as Amouage! Right off the test sprays I could tell that Royal Tobacco was going to be a beast of a fragrance! Sweet and spicy, it’s powerfully complex and intriguing. I went with the usual sprays, being careful to not over apply, thinking that I had to brave the NYC subways to get to Brooklynn and back, hopefully in one piece!! The top notes unfold in a regal symphony of aromatic richness, where the smoky essence of tobacco takes center stage with an assertive yet refined presence. The opening is a captivating dance of spicy elements, featuring hints of cardamom that add a touch of warmth and complexity.
Into the mid, Royal Tobacco evolves into a lavish blend where the warm embrace of tobacco continues to reign, now accompanied by the sweet and aromatic nuances of licorice, lavender, orange and rose. Absolutely crazy that I can pick up that much, but that’s just a testament to how well blended Amouage fragrances can be. The tobacco is neither the rich, moist pipe kind nor the dry cigar type. It’s more of a blending of the two extremes type tobacco. The supporting mid accords introduce a layer of creamy richness that enhances the overall opulence of the composition. The interplay of tobacco and the spices and floral components create a sophisticated juxtaposition, where the earthy and smoky facets of tobacco seamlessly merge with the sweet and slightly spicy characteristics of licorice, citrus and floral.
The transition to the base is characterized with a majestic symphony of dark woods and incense, leaving an indelible imprint of depth, opulent warmth, and regal sophistication. Here, a warm darkness envelops the wearer as a smoky tobacco persists; joined by the velvety smoothness of rich woods and incense that imparts a luxurious tactile quality to the fragrance. As the composition evolves, the base further deepens with the inclusion of tonka, vetiver and musk, casting a lingering spell of nobility and elegance.
The longevity of Royal Tobacco is extraordinary; I get 10+ hours with moderate projection. The sillage is both powerful and sophisticated, making it a fragrance that commands attention without being overwhelming. Best in the colder weather, I wouldn’t venture it in, or around, the summertime. This is a fragrance more for the mature, more seasoned wearer of niche scents. It’s powerful and complex! Masculine through and through, Royal Tobacco is good for formal occasions and sophisticated date nights. Not really for the office or gym.
Final Verdict: Amouage Royal Tobacco stands as a true testament to the mastery of perfumery, offering an exceptional and luxurious olfactory experience. From the very first inhalation, the fragrance captivates with an opulent blend of rich and smoky tobacco, creating an intoxicating aura of sophistication. The quality of ingredients is apparent; the craftsmanship is exquisite, all showcasing Amouage's dedication to creating fragrances that are truly works of art. Royal Tobacco is a fragrance for those who appreciate the finer things in life, it transcends trends and time, making it a worthy addition to any perfume connoisseur's collection.
Joe Average Rating (JAR®): Geez, that really sounds like a fragrance for The Most Interesting Man in the World. It sounds overly niche, with beast mode longevity and above average projection. Versatility is just average as its limited to colder weather and just a handful of occasions. It’s more of a special-occasion signature. And with a higher price point, something like this is really out of range for the average Joe. For the enthusiast, sure! Scent profile alone, this is 9.5 or higher, however, altogether I’d give it a… JAR®
