Does perfumes expire?

I am new in the game with 2 Yrs in the collection journey. Would love to hear from veterans and budding fragheads viewpoints on expiry of the perfumes. Based on my very limited knowhow perfumes perform better as they age but what is the limit and does perfumes long more than the expiry date? does the composition/ compounds used play a role in it? I have collected back up bottles for my favourites but now I am worried how will they perform after expiry?
