“Blue” showdown.
So, today I’m doing a head to head between three blue fragrances. What exactly is a blue fragrance? My guess is a fresh, Bleu de Chanel like fragrance, slightly floral, sometimes citrus, and ambery. Does that answer it? Hardly. It does seem the unifying component is a fresh, mass appealing scent. Not as watery as ADG, not as citrusy as Eau du Savauge. But it is a blend where you can’t quite say… citrus, floral, watery, amber. It can have all, but they play as a team.
I’m trying out Zaharoff Signature Seraphim Blue and comparing it to my other two blue fragrances, Versace Dylan Blue and Eros EDT.
The procedure, one spray of Dylan Blue on my left wrist, one spray of Seraphim Blue on my right wrist, and one spray of Eros EDT on the inside of my right elbow.
To start, the similarities. Each of these is clean, fresh and mass appealing. They are all easy-wear fragrances, and very pleasant. The amber notes are present in each giving an underlying vanilla/pine kind of feel. Amber is hard to describe so it is hard to know if I am smelling it. They say it is a warm cozy smell. And each of these has a “warm cozy” base, but that is not the forward scent, you can smell it underneath the other notes– the notes that dominate the “clean” side of these fragrances. And it is in the clean notes are where they make themselves distinct.
The differences.
Versace Dylan Blue. This one for me is great from the first spray all the way through. It has a sharp Bergamot with a pepper amber base. It is largely linear except the Bergamot tempers as time goes on, which makes sense, citruses are typically short acting. Many describe this one as a “shower gel” kind of smell. And that is absolutely right. That watery, musky, bergamot combines in exactly that way. As for performance. This is not a powerhouse, but it will get noticed. Some say 2+ feet… however that is determined. Really, heat, humidity, number of sprays, body chemistry, and more determines this. What I can say is it doesn’t fill a room, it doesn’t choke you out in a car, but it is noticeable. I get almost 8 hours in a climate controlled environment, but it is a skin scent for the last two hours.
Eros EDT. Also a mass appealing scent. In my office, most prefer this to Dylan Blue. It is described as apple forward, but I think the lemon, geranium, and vanilla are more prominent. I have to tilt my head, squint my eyes and stand on one leg to think I feel a hint of a thought of a memory of a green apple. Though that may just be my nose. This fragrance has a life journey. Lemon for sure in the beginning, and as it develops the geranium and vanilla take more prominence. Though this is a clean fragrance, not compared to the “shower gel” powerhouse of Dylan Blue. Eros EDT is a warmer fragrance. Projection is about the same as for Dylan Blue. Not one that will choke you out in a car, but one that is definitely noticed. For me longevity is weaker than Dylan blue. This one is a skin scent at 4 hours, and gone at 5 hours.
Seraphim Blue. The wet spray of this is pretty sharp for about 10 minutes. I thought, what did I get into at the first spray. The initial spray was synthetic and alcohol heavy. For only 10 minutes… then it was absolutely delightful! If Dylan Blue is “Shower gel,” Seraphim Blue is “white soap” It is definitely clean and fresh and floral. This one seems to lean into Orange blossom which is the light floral soapy note that dominates. There is a hint of marine saltiness and a powdery Iris. I can’t say enough of how good this one is. Projection is exactly the same as Dylan Blue and Eros EDT. Longevity: I’d say a skin scent at 5 hours. Gone between 7 and 8 hours.
As for each in summary. Dylan blue wins longevity, and leans into a shower gel aquatic citrus clean scent. Eros EDT is the warmest of the two with vanilla and geranium notes, but still a lemony clean scent, and as for longevity loses to the others. Seraphim Blue sits in the middle on longevity, but sets itself apart as a soft floral soapy clean fragrance.
How do you feel about these three? Which is your favorite or which one would you try first?
