Symptoms are Signals (Take Your Power Back)
Most of us were taught to see symptoms as an enemy—something to silence as fast as possible.
But in a terrain-first, root-cause approach, symptoms are often the body’s communication system:
  • A warning light
  • A compensation strategy
  • A signal that your internal environment needs support
That doesn’t mean symptoms aren’t real (they absolutely are, in so much as symptoms are the only way our biology communicates its needs!)
Because when you only suppress the message (via medications), the body usually finds a louder way to speak.
What “Taking Your Power Back” Actually Means
Taking your power back isn’t rebellion against medicine. It’s refusing to outsource responsibility for your health.
It’s learning how to ask better questions like:
  • Why is my immune system reacting like this?
  • What’s driving inflammation right now?
  • Is my nervous system stuck in survival mode?
  • Is my gut barrier compromised?
  • Is my blood sugar quietly dysregulating hormones and mood?
  • Is my toxic load higher than my ability to clear it?
The Pattern We See Over and Over
A lot of diagnoses share overlapping “terrain drivers.” Not always all of them, but commonly a combination of one or more of the following:
1) Gut inflammation + microbiome imbalance
When the gut barrier is irritated, the immune system stays on high alert. Food reactions, nutrient depletion, and chronic inflammation often follow.
2) Blood sugar / insulin resistance
This is one of the most under-recognized drivers of fatigue, hormone disruption, mood swings, cravings, stubborn weight gain, and systemic inflammation.
3) Toxic burden
Mold, chemicals, fragrances, plastics, heavy metals, and everyday exposures can overload detox capacity—especially when minerals, glutathione status, and bile flow are compromised.
4) Infections + immune load
Sometimes what looks like “autoimmune flares” is immune activation from unresolved stealth infections, oral health issues, gut pathogens, or chronic viral reactivation.
5) Nervous system dysregulation (stress physiology)
If your body is stuck in fight/flight, digestion slows, detox slows, sleep worsens, hormones get chaotic, pain sensitivity increases, and healing becomes harder—even with a perfect diet.
6) Nutrient depletion
Low magnesium, zinc, selenium, vitamin D, B vitamins, omega-3s, protein insufficiency, and low stomach acid can quietly keep the body from repairing.
A Bedrock Reframe
Your body is not betraying you.
It’s communicating with you.
LISTEN to it!
Symptoms aren’t the problem.
They’re the message.
“Medical System Says vs. Terrain Reality”
This is not meant to shame doctors or tell anyone to stop treatment. (Ok maybe it is!)
But, It’s definitely to expand the lens.
When the system says: “It’s IBS—learn to live with it.”
Terrain lens asks: What’s inflaming the gut? (microbiome imbalance, stress physiology, low stomach acid, bile issues, food triggers, toxin burden)
When the system says: “PCOS? Birth control to regulate the cycle.”
Terrain lens asks: What’s driving insulin resistance + endocrine disruption? (blood sugar, chronic stress, sleep debt, insulin resistance, inflammatory inputs, nutrient depletion)
When the system says: “Autoimmune? Suppress the immune system.”
Terrain lens asks: Why is the immune system activated? (gut barrier, stealth infections, toxic load, nutrient status, mitochondrial stress, trauma/stress physiology)
When the system says: “Your labs are normal.”
Terrain lens asks: Are they OPTIMAL? There is a huge difference between tracking with an unhealthy population pool, and living your best life! Do we need deeper (or smarter) testing (or trend tracking) to see what’s brewing?
The 5 Pillars of Taking Your Power Back
These are the Bedrock foundations we return to again and again:
1) Real food that stabilizes inflammation + blood sugar
Protein-first. Mineral-rich. Simple. Consistent.
2) Gut repair + microbiome support
Because the gut is where immune tolerance is trained.
3) Detox capacity (not aggressive detox)
Support drainage: hydration, minerals, bile flow, regular bowel movements, sweat, and liver support when appropriate.
4) Nervous system regulation
Breath, prayer, sleep rhythm, sunlight, walking, boundaries, and reducing overstimulation.
5) Non-toxic living
Lower the burden so the body can use energy to heal instead of defend.
Start Here: The “Power Back” 7-Day Reset
If you’re overwhelmed, don’t do everything. Do this:
Day 1–2: Stabilize
  • Protein-first breakfast (or first meal)
  • 2–3 liters water + electrolytes
  • 10–20 min walk
  • Screen reduction at night
Day 3–4: Remove the biggest drivers
  • Remove: ultra-processed foods, seed oils, added sugar, alcohol, grains & legumes
  • Choose: meat/fish/eggs, cooked veggies, fruit (if tolerated), healthy fats
Day 5–7: Regulate
  • Morning sunlight + simple movement
  • 5 minutes breath + prayer
  • Bedtime routine (same time nightly)
  • Track symptoms (what improved? what flared?)
When to Get Help Immediately
If you have chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, severe abdominal pain, black/tarry stools, sudden weakness/numbness, severe depression or suicidal thoughts, or rapid unexplained weight loss—seek urgent medical care.
