Merry Christmas, and a Gentle Reminder to Be Prepared for the Flu
As we celebrate Christmas, I want to wish you and your family a season filled with peace, rest, and meaningful time together. There is something deeply grounding about slowing down, gathering with loved ones, and remembering what truly matters much like the quiet wisdom found in Little Women or the gentle awakening in A Christmas Carol: care for one another, especially when life feels heavy. Our family has a tradition of watching I Heard the Bells the movie about the history of that carol that is so touching.
This year, our family time came with a timely reminder. While visiting relatives, one spouse had to stay home—taken down hard by the flu while the other was recovering. Though improving, the other spouse's voice was still raspy, coughing lingered, and energy was clearly depleted plus had an injury. I pulled out homeopathy to help the injury and gave her remedies for the sick loved one at home.
Another relative, working in healthcare, shared how severely the flu has impacted staff and patients alike—longer hours, increased patient load, and wave after wave of symptoms coming through the doors.
After chatting with this person last night, I woke up this morning noticing some extra mucus myself. Nothing major—but a reminder of how easily our bodies respond to exposure, especially during this season. Add to that the reality of the holidays: more parties, more gatherings, and let’s be honest—not eating as cleanly or consistently as we normally do. All of this can lower our resilience and make us more susceptible. I grabbed a homeopathic remedy for myself as soon as I jumped out of bed and am already feeling back to normal.
It’s a strong reminder: flu season is here, and preparation matters.
Why Being Prepared Matters
When illness hits, especially suddenly, having supportive remedies on hand can make a meaningful difference—for yourself, your family, and even those you love who may not be with you physically. I was grateful to have homeopathy available and was able to send remedies home with the sick spouse to support recovery that night and the following day.
Homeopathy shines here because it can be used gently, early, and supportively—often alongside conventional care—without suppressing the body’s natural healing response.
Key Homeopathic Remedies for Flu Season
Oscillococcinum
This is the remedy I gave for the acute flu symptoms and is one I highly recommend having on hand during flu season. It’s best known for:
· Early flu symptoms
· Sudden onset of fever, chills, body aches
· Fatigue and weakness
It works best when taken at the first sign of illness but can also be helpful when someone is already “in it” and feeling run down. Think of it as your first responder.
Aconite
Aconite is ideal when symptoms come on suddenly, often after exposure to cold or stress:
· Sudden fever
· Anxiety or restlessness
· Early stages of illness
If someone says, “I was fine and now I’m not,” Aconite is often the first remedy to consider.
Bryonia
Bryonia fits flu cases where:
· Everything hurts
· Movement makes symptoms worse
· Dry cough and great thirst
· The person wants to be left alone
This is a classic remedy for flu with deep body aches and exhaustion.
Phosphorus
Phosphorus is helpful when:
· The cough is persistent or chest-focused
· Voice is hoarse or raspy
· There is sensitivity, weakness, or lingering symptoms
It’s especially useful when illness seems to hang on after the worst has passed.
Eupatorium perfoliatum
Often called the “bone-break fever” remedy:
· Severe body aches, especially in bones and muscles
· High fever
· Flu with intense soreness
If the flu feels deep in the body, Eupatorium is a strong consideration.
A Few Others Worth Having on Hand
· Gelsemium – Flu with heavy fatigue, weakness, droopy eyelids
· Arsenicum album – Flu with anxiety, restlessness, chills, and digestive upset
· Belladonna – Sudden high fever, heat, flushed face
A Christmas Takeaway
Just as we plan meals, gifts, and travel, it’s wise to plan for health—especially during the winter months. Having remedies on hand allows you to respond calmly rather than scramble reactively.
Preparedness is an act of care. It’s quiet, practical love—the kind that shows up when someone can’t and a sweet gift of healing.
As you move through the rest of this holiday season, don’t forget to give yourself and your loved ones the gift of homeopathic remedies, trusted resources, and education or training. Knowledge plus preparation empowers you to support health with confidence—not just at Christmas, but all year long.
Are you seeing or have experienced flu this year in your part of the world? What homeopathic or natural remedies have worked?
