Why Most Agencies Fail: A Lesson I Learned After 8 Months
A lot of people dive into building agencies or online businesses after watching a few “gurus” on YouTube. They get pumped up, start cold outreach, and begin chasing clients left and right.
But here’s the hard truth: it’s not sustainable if you lack credibility.
After 7-8 months of being in this client-chasing game, I hit rock bottom. That’s when I learned a game-changing lesson: people prefer working with those they trust. And trust comes from branding.
Master Your Skills, Build Your Brand
Yes, you need to master the core skill set for your business—whether it’s lead generation, web development, or creative services. But don’t stop there. Work on your personal brand alongside your skill-building. How?
  • Start a faceless page and share free value in your niche.
  • Post 5-10 LinkedIn updates weekly about your journey.
  • Launch a YouTube channel and document your process.
  • Build a personal brand page on Instagram or Twitter.
In the beginning, focus on giving value without expecting anything in return. Over time, this builds a reputation. When you land your first few clients, share your social profiles before hopping on sales calls—it immediately boosts your credibility. By the time you start pitching, you’ve already positioned yourself as an expert.
Set Up the Basics of Your Business Brand
Credibility isn’t just personal—it applies to your business too.
Ensure you have:
  • A clean, professional website that reflects your services.
  • Basic legal formalities covered (business registration, contracts, etc.).
  • Active social media profiles on major platforms with consistent value-driven posts.
  • A blog section on your website where you regularly post content that helps your audience.
If I could go back a year, these are the things I would’ve focused on from day one. Even my mentors keep emphasizing how essential branding is.
Are You Running a Business or Just Freelancing?
Here’s a hard pill to swallow: If you’re offering services without building a brand and still seeing some success, you’re not running a business—you’re an advanced freelancer.
Ask yourself this: Why did we all start online service businesses like lead gen, creative agencies, or web dev? Because we saw people who had already succeeded in this model and built personal brands around it (the same “gurus” we now follow). That’s their credibility. That’s why we trusted their content enough to dive into the game.
What’s your take on this? Are you focused on building a brand or still chasing clients without one? Comment your thoughts below I’d love to hear your perspective!
