Improbable musical recollections
Ok the weirdest thing just happened and I think this group will appreciate it maybe more than any other: I had a part of a song stuck in my head and didn’t know what it was. All I could remember was that it was a kind of Breakfast Clubby 80s song, lower-voiced singer, and part of the chorus melody, none of the words. Doesn’t narrow it down much. I started trying to search for it, quickly gave up, and then, since I’d been thinking about that set of criteria, I thought, “oh I could check out that band The Church; I’ve never really listened to them.” I picked the album that had cover art I recognized, and you can imagine my surprise when track 2 came on. Not only was it THE song (Under the Milky Way), the lyrics of the part that had been in my head were directly relevant to the whole situation. Wish I knew what you were looking for Might have known what you would find 🤯 Such a satisfying moment, haha. Anyone have stories about songs bubbling up from the subconscious in serendipitous ways? Would love to hear them!

@Shane McNeil oh man, that tension of being able to hear something in your head but not place it can be unbearable haha, I’m glad you got closure on both of those and hope your partner did too!

@Shane McNeil 😂 the irony! So good
Brandi Carlile
I'm excited to see Brandi for the first time in Chicago tomorrow night. Has anyone seen her before?

I got to see her at Benaroya Hall, one of the last things I went to before everything shut down in 2020, she’s so good!

@Mike Lupo how was the show?
What’s the farthest you’ve ever gone for a show?
I braved an ice storm for an out-of-town Nine Inch Nails show last night and it made me think of going on musical road trips. I think the furthest I’ve gone specifically for a concert is Minneapolis (from Toronto) though I’ve certainly caught concerts further away while already travelling. My (probably mathematically unbreakable) record there is Sydney.

Not especially far, but I made a little pilgrimage from Seattle to LA to see Jon Brion at Largo in 2014; that was a special one for me

@Shane McNeil it’s fuzzy being so long ago now, but I remember a bunch of instruments and improvised looping, maybe a part where he was playing along with a video, kind of live soundtracking? I highly recommend his solo album, Meaningless. Some great kitchen-sink pop songs on there!
Song?
Drop one song in the comments and don’t explain why. Go!

Album for Specific Mood?
Is there an album you only really listen to when you’re in a very, very specific mood? Like, any other time feels like the wrong time if you’re not in that mood? Kind of like an anchor? For me, Radiohead’s The Bends is the album, and it surprises me because I’m a casual Radiohead fan, but that album was there for me and is still is. Anyone else with that kind of surprise affection?

I pretty much have to listen to () by Sigur Rós every time there’s more than 2” of snow on the ground, haha
