2026 First Half 5x5
Here's my top 25 streams for 2026. Seattle's Korean math-rock band Plash finishing in the top spot. Impressive debut for a very talented band. Top merch item goes to Remember Sports for making a refrigerator magnet for their album "The Refrigerator" that simply says "Refrigerator" on it. Special Award to Sincere Engineer for finishing in 18th place with an album that released just days ago.

I don’t clock albums, but if interested here’s a countdown style (track 1 is #20, etc.) playlist of my 20 most-played tracks. Only caveat is I kept it to one per artist: https://music.apple.com/ca/playlist/halfway-20/pl.u-PDbYDl4txl2kZ https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3n1XO1Sr66XFQuNzG44wU5

@Howie Cohen I put em together manually based on YTD totals from the Musicat app.
Daily Music Diary Mix
So one thing I’ve gotten into over the last few years is making a song-a-day mix. I got the idea from ex-MTV host Dave Holmes, and all you do is pick one song each day… something you hear, something you think of, something tied to an event/news item/personal milestone, etc. and you just keep building over 365. At the end of each year (or each month, even) not only do you have a sweet - and often very random! - mix but afterwards you can look back on it and re-live the time… be it “oh yeah, that’s the day I watched ____” or “I was out at my local and this song just hit the moment perfectly!” Just sharing in case anyone here wants to give it a go moving forward! Or maybe you do it too? If anyone is interested, here’s how my year started (and, yes, thank you @John Richards for more than a couple of these!) https://music.apple.com/ca/playlist/01-january-2026/pl.u-b3b84WNUbAvLP https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6LhKcbjOy0CkY4mJFazeCT

How do you keep up with live events?
Is there any website or other service that has music listings? There was an in-store at Subpop that I missed - I didn't know Subpop was doing in-stores. Is it all Instagram now? Is there a live show aggregator?

I use Songkick. Basically you follow the bands you like and it shoots you a notification when they announce shows in your area. It might not have things like in-stores, & it’s not really built to browse what’s on nightly or weekly or whatever, but if you’re like “I love ____ and would see them if they played here,” it should keep you on top of it.

@Sara Bible as a KEXP listener in MN, I’d be really curious to hear your opinion on The Current. But maybe that’s a long discussion…

@Sara Bible Thanks for sharing! I stumbled into them around 2011 and was a sustaining member for about a decade after (despite being located in Toronto). I don’t have the local perspective, but what I can say - in addition to their playlist roster not being the deepest - is that what finally tipped it for me was a combination of 2 things. 1. The on-air staff got hollowed out. I started listening and it was mostly Barb & Looch & Oake & Riley, then they left (/were pushed out) and it went to the B squad with Jade & McPherson & Mac Wilson, and they were pretty decent, but then all of them left and it went down to people like Jessica Paxton who literally just plagiarizes Wikipedia on-air. (I literally refer to her as “Wiki” to my partner and change the channel if she’s on the mic) 2. The vibes just got too earnest. In 2020 the city was burning after George Floyd and everyone was teetering on a breakdown with covid and they were doing “the top 893 songs that bring us together” and not talking about anything that was actually going on in the world and I just couldn’t… I still listen occasionally (am actually listening right now), but it went from my #1 (/pretty much exclusive) radio choice to at least #4 behind KEXP, WXPN in Philly and even KUTX Austin… mostly on the strength of the DJs (esp. John Richards, Mike V. in Philly & Laurie Gallardo in Austin) and slightly more expansive playlist options. I actually finally just became a KEXP sustaining member, so I’m excited to start wearing my shirt to shows here and making more friends.
