Record player
. I need to upgrade my record player. I have a basic Victrola that is skipping with my new record club albums. Looking for recommendations for a new one…thinking $200 range.

@Amy Weaver sweet! So excited for you! Any new vinyl on your list?
Listening Habits
Curious how people are actually listening right now. I play music for people in a room, in a box, sometimes in my own home. When you put on new music, are you Walking? Driving? Cooking? Lying on the floor?? At work with one earbud in. There’s no wrong answer. Just interested in the habits.

It depends on my vibe. I made a new friend who’s a DJ (very psychedelic ambient), and they had a few streams available, and for that I wrapped myself up in a cocoon with noise cancelling earbuds and drifted off into a half-sleep (sober!) half-waking experience. Otherwise I definitely like walking and listening. But I think my dream is of like back in the day when I’d be over at a friends and lying on the floor and they’d say something like “have you heard the <band name>?” And then put on the album.

I realize after reading the responses that if I’m not listening to specific albums, or my non-KEXP DJ friend’s show, I’m listening to KEXP, usually on my HomePods. It feels so normal to me.
Album for Specific Mood?
Is there an album you only really listen to when you’re in a very, very specific mood? Like, any other time feels like the wrong time if you’re not in that mood? Kind of like an anchor? For me, Radiohead’s The Bends is the album, and it surprises me because I’m a casual Radiohead fan, but that album was there for me and is still is. Anyone else with that kind of surprise affection?

@Benedetto Manzella thanks for sharing, I love hearing what stirs people - it makes me want to check Bell Witch out! (I actually worked with Larry from Pelican at Whole Foods in Chicago 22 yrs ago!)
Music influences
Anybody have the typical older sibling music influence as a teenager? Is it something you’ve stuck pretty close to, some of which you still count as all time favorites or did your musical journey take you on your own somewhat different or completely different path? My older sister definitely had a big influence on what I listened to as a teenager. Typical 70s teen I remember it was bands like Bad Company, Montrose, Foghat. That was it until the first time I watched MTV in the 80s then everything changed.

I didn’t have siblings, but every time I see one of my cousins, who Is 8yrs younger than me, he reminds me of when I introduced him to Nirvana’s In Utero. He said it changed his life.
The song you weren't ready for
So, I have songs and albums that are slow burners. I know you know. You almost get mad at yourself for not loving it from the go. I liked OK Computer at first and well, it's near the top of my all timers now. I do this on the show as well. I love it actually as I can hear from listeners who are also "getting it" along with me. Is there a song from this past year that didn’t land at first—but later found you when you were ready? Those are often the ones that last.

Agree with OK Computer - had never heard anything like it before, so I didn’t know how to contextualize it after falling hard for The Bends.
