It appears everywhere and is essential for numbers, counting, and basic expressions. 🔤 Meaning one first single beginning 🗣️ Readings いち (ichi) いつ (itsu) ひと(つ) (hito/–tsu) – native Japanese counting 🧩 Common Words 一人(ひとり) – one person / alone 一つ(ひとつ) – one thing 一日(いちにち / ついたち) – one day / the 1st of the month 一番(いちばん) – number one / the best 一年(いちねん) – one year 一回(いっかい) – one time 📝 Simple Example Sentences 1. 一つください。 → One, please. 2. 今日は一日、家で休みました。 → I rested at home all day. 3. これは私の一番好きなゲームです。 → This is my number-one favourite game. 4. 一人で行きます。 → I will go alone. ✨ Memory Tip It’s one straight line — easy to remember: One stroke = “one.” Also the base shape used in many other kanji.
