For our next Ocha & Chat, we’ll practise simple everyday sentences in Japanese. We’ll talk about things we do, things we can do, and things we cannot do. A key part of today’s mini lesson is the particle を (o). 🧠 Mini Lesson: を The particle を marks the object of a verb. In simple terms, it shows what the action is done to. Pattern: Noun + を + Verb Example 本を読みます。 Hon o yomimasu. I read a book. 本 = book を = object marker 読みます = read Negative / Cannot We can also say something cannot be done. 本を読めません。 Hon o yomemasen. I cannot read the book. More Examples 日本語を勉強します。 Nihongo o benkyō shimasu. I study Japanese. 音楽を聞きます。 Ongaku o kikimasu. I listen to music. 映画を見ます。 Eiga o mimasu. ✏️ Goal: Write a short diary entry in Japanese 🧠 Mini Lesson: Using で for transport 🧠 Mini Lesson: Go to work by ___ In Japanese, we use で to say by (transport). Pattern: Place に Transport で 行きます Examples: バスで行きます。 Basu de ikimasu. I go by bus. 電車で行きます。 Densha de ikimasu. I go by train. 車で行きます。 Kuruma de ikimasu. I go by car. ✅ Beginner 先生の車はこわれています。 Sensei no kuruma wa kowarete imasu. Sensei’s car is broken. ちょっといらいらします。 Chotto iraira shimasu. It’s frustrating. 駅に歩いて行きます。 Eki ni aruite ikimasu. I walk to the station. 仕事この辺に電車で行きます。 Shigoto no hen ni densha de ikimasu. I go to the area of my work by train. バスで仕事に行きます。 Basu de shigoto ni ikimasu. I go to work by bus. バスで本を読みます。 Basu de hon o yomimasu. I read on the bus. それはいいです。 Sore wa ii desu. These are key for every day Japanese, diary entries and understanding common conversations. Can you create a sentence using one of these?

Following on from something we talked about in Ocha and Chat, I made this mini lesson on sentence connectors that can really improve your ability to express your ideas in Japanese. Sentence connectors help you join ideas smoothly — like and, but, because, so in English. In Japanese, connectors often come at the end of a clause. 1️⃣ から — “because” から (kara) means because and gives a reason. Structure: Reason + から + Result Or: Reason + ですから、Result Examples: 雨ですから、行きません。 Ame desu kara, ikimasen. → Because it’s raining, I won’t go. 日本語が好きですから、毎日べんきょうします。 Nihongo ga suki desu kara, mainichi benkyō shimasu. → Because I like Japanese, I study every day. つかれましたから、ねます。 Tsukaremashita kara, nemasu. → Because I’m tired, I’ll sleep. Casual form: 雨だから、行かない。 Ame da kara, ikanai. → Because it’s raining, I’m not going. 2️⃣ そして — “and / and then” そして (soshite) adds information or continues a story. きのうスーパーへ行きました。そして、パンを買いました。 Kinō sūpā e ikimashita. Soshite, pan o kaimashita. → I went to the supermarket yesterday. And then I bought bread. 3️⃣ でも — “but” でも (demo) shows contrast and starts a new sentence. 日本語はむずかしいです。でも、おもしろいです。 Nihongo wa muzukashii desu. Demo, omoshiroi desu. Japanese is difficult. But it’s interesting. 4️⃣ それから — “after that / and then” それから (sorekara) shows sequence. 朝ごはんを食べました。それから、学校へ行きました。 Asagohan o tabemashita. Sorekara, gakkō e ikimashita. I ate breakfast. After that, I went to school. 5️⃣ だから — “so / therefore” だから (dakara) gives the result and starts a new sentence. 今日は雨です。だから、うちにいます。 Kyō wa ame desu. Dakara, uchi ni imasu. It’s raining today. So, I’ll stay home. 🔎 から vs だから から = attaches to the reason だから = starts the result sentence Example: 今日は雨ですから、うちにいます。 Kyō wa ame desu kara, uchi ni imasu. Because it’s raining today, I’ll stay home. 今日は雨です。だから、うちにいます。 Kyō wa ame desu. Dakara, uchi ni imasu. It’s raining today. So, I’ll stay home. Ganbatte kudasai! Joe Sensei.
