I Spent $10k on an Art Exhibition...Was it Worth it?
Hey Artists Recently, I did an art exhibition in Queenstown, New Zealand, and I spent $10,000 on it! Let me tell you what happened πŸ˜… After 5 years away from exhibitions, I decided to jump back in with a group show. It was an eye-opening experience, to say the least. In this video, I break down EVERY cost involved, framing, transport, venue fees, marketing, all of it. And I share where my focus has shifted over the past few years. If you've ever wondered whether exhibitions are worth pursuing, or you're trying to figure out your own path as an artist, I think you'll find this interesting. Watch it below πŸ‘‡ I would love to hear your thoughts. Have any of you done exhibitions? What was your experience? Happy painting Sam P.S. The online teaching approach I mentioned in the video? That's what I do every week in my Art School: live painting classes, personalised critiques, and a library of 60+ tutorials, and a course to help you improve your paintings in just 7 days. I enjoyed this video Sam! But I would add that not all cost is β€œburnt” now you can use the frames forever and there could be much cheaper ways of presenting your work if you go to a local cafΓ© or restaurant/hotel πŸ”₯
Cloud study 1- Beach
Small gouache painting inspired by Sam's "clouds tutorial" and painted from my photo of one of Australia's vast northern beaches.

looks great @Margaret Neith ! If you paint the shadows too dark the clouds might loose their soft feeling, so better to keep the shadows there a bit lighter. I like to touch the gouache up later even with a little water if those values got a bit dark. Great composition, really inviting! πŸ‘πŸ‘

@Margaret Neith Clouds can be really tricky :) And there is many ways to paint them! Do you mind sharing the new version?
Using Procreate or digital painting app to plan a painting?
Has anyone ever used a digital painting application to help plan a composition? I've started to use Procreate to sketch out ideas and compositions before I execute the actual painting. I found this useful for exploration and experimenting with composition and color. Although I'm still learning how to use the app, it really helps me think about oil painting. Here's a few examples of recent works.

hey @Stephen Winiecki I like to use digital painting apps to design composition too! Most of the time I feel even a simple crop or value check could work too without painting a whole scene :) You can try this even in Photopea.com for free or Affinity is now free too (alternatives to photoshop) Definitely digital tools are priceless in quick iterations. I like to compare the variants on a larger moodboard to see which one is telling the story better
Something different
Experiment with a more expressive painting with warm colours in gouache on paper (24x32 cm). Inspired by an internet tutorial. Still tried to incorporate Sam's method (darkest darks and lightest lights in the foreground etc), though I might have my mid ground trees and background purples still a bit too much on the saturated side, this way. Anyway, it was fun and another learning experience. I think I might have pushed the atmospheric depth a bit more, but I kind of like how the light/dark play turned out.

looks great @Johan Krijgsman ! Love the colors, I can feel the energy of the sun :)
Apple orchard
Painted this from a tutorial, nice practice of greens and atmospheric depth, also shadow/light play. Acrylics on paper.

Looks great @Johan Krijgsman The background yellow is a bit strong, because of the atmospheric perspective the yellow should loose its intensity by the distance, especially if you have a low angle light (or I like to push it a bit to feel the distance a bit) Love the shadow it feels really alive !

@Johan Krijgsman Ah that makes sense! from the perspective I thought there should be sky somewhere. There could be a scenario where the light is hitting the surface from the front. From the lush greens I thought its not a desert scene + I like to include the atmosphere in outdoor scenes as it adds an airy breathing space :)
