I Built a Voice Agent Demo with Retell + n8n in Under 3 Hours
Client asked: “Can we build a voice agent that books appointments — but only for qualified leads?” I said: give me 3 hours. 🔧 What I Used: - Retell AI: for voice interaction (VAPI) - n8n: for logic, lead scoring, and booking 🧠 Logic: - Retell captures the call - n8n listens for trigger phrases (“I’m interested”) - Based on answers, assigns a score - Qualified? It books a Calendly slot - Not qualified? Ends politely and logs the interaction 💥 Bonus: - Logs everything into Notion - Slack ping when a hot lead books It’s still a demo, but the client was blown away. Voice AI + no-code is no joke. Happy to share the JSON if you’re building something similar.
This Tiny n8n Workflow Saved Me 6 Hours a Week
Sometimes the smallest workflows give you the biggest ROI. Here’s one that now saves me 6 hours every week — no exaggeration. 🚨 Problem: Manually copying key client call insights from voice agents → Google Sheets. Repetitive, boring, and error-prone. 🛠 Solution: 1. Retell AI records calls 2. n8n pulls transcripts via API 3. Sends summary request to OpenAI 4. Stores structured output into Airtable 5. Bonus: Sends Slack DM with top 3 takeaways All automatic. All background. ⏱ Result: - Zero manual copy-paste - Cleaner, consistent data - More time for client delivery If you want the JSON template, comment “WORKFLOW” and I’ll drop it.
Why I Picked n8n Over Make.com for My AI Automation Stack
When I started building client-facing automation systems, I tested both Make.com and n8n for several weeks. Both are powerful, but here’s why n8n became my go-to: 🔍 What I Needed: - Full control over API behavior - Custom JS functions - Flexibility for scale - Self-hosting options 🛠 Why n8n Won: - Native code execution — Function node lets me inject logic without external tools. - Open-source + self-hosted — No vendor lock-in. Perfect for client projects with compliance constraints. - Scripting freedom — More “developer-ish,” but I like that. Make.com’s UI limits were slowing me down. - Community & Plugins — n8n’s plugin ecosystem is growing, and the GitHub issues are actually helpful. Downsides? Sure. Slightly steeper learning curve, and no fancy UI animations. But when you want control > comfort, n8n just makes sense. Anyone else here switch from Make to n8n? Curious what pushed you over the edge.
