What's REALLY going on in China?
Over recent years I have paid an interest in looking at content about China, and what life is like inside the people's republic, from a westerners' perspective. However, I have noticed that the opinions of the place seems to fall into one of two camps: • People who have moved over there that always sing it's praises, saying it's much better over there - than the chaos of the west, etc. • And channels run by vloggers who used to live over there, saying the place is made of tofu dreg - causing buildings to collapse every day, along with other serious issues that they blame the gov for. I appreciate that if you are living over there and are concerned about your content being monitored, you might not be able to post anything negative (ironically a bit like the UK at the moment) ... but any feedback would be welcome. Thank you. Digital Nomad's Social Media Compass
Do you find it difficult in finding the right social media platform which can be crucial for digital nomads looking to build a brand, attract clients, and earn a living. The most popular and effective channels vary significantly depending on the region. Here is a brief list to the most popular platforms for generating business leads in key countries. Please let me know if there are any platforms that I have missed! East and Southeast Asia (A gold mine for teaching/coaching/mentoring) - Thailand & Vietnam: Facebook and TikTok are dominant. Facebook is used extensively for social commerce and community building, while TikTok is the go-to for viral, short-form video content and reaching a younger audience. LINE is also a major player in Thailand for direct customer communication. - China: The social media landscape is distinct. WeChat is the 'super app', used for everything from messaging to payments and business interactions. Other key platforms include Douyin (China's version of TikTok) for video content and e-commerce, and Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) for lifestyle and shopping. - Japan: LINE is the most popular messaging app and is integral for business communications. X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram are also highly popular, with Instagram being key for visual-focused brands and X for real-time updates and customer service. - South Korea: KakaoTalk is the leading messaging app and is a must for direct engagement with customers. Naver Blog is essential for search engine optimisation and building authority, while YouTube and Instagram are the top platforms for video and visual content. Western Countries (I know Facebook should be on here!) - The UK & America: Instagram and LinkedIn are often the most effective for business. Instagram is ideal for showcasing a visual brand and attracting clients in creative fields, while LinkedIn is the premier platform for professional networking and securing business-to-business (B2B) services. Facebook and YouTube are also powerful for broad audience reach and long-form content.

Brings back memories of “Mixi” in Japan. I lived in Kyoto in the mid 2000’s and Mixi was all the rage then. Neat little app, sort of a precursor to Facebook. Not sure if it’s still around. That aside, great post. I’m not a big social media guy (but that may need to change as I build my new business - 1 client already, potentially a second coming in November) but I would think that focusing on 1 or 2 would be superior to spreading out over too many. Markets need to be defined and honed in on. There’s a lot out there, and a lot of fluff, too. Good post for considering this kind of thing.

Have you been to French Polynesia?
So this is my number 1 place that I really want to go to. And in fact I have changed my travel plans so that I go there first when I leave the UK lol (yes I want to get as far away as possible 😂). Now all the places I really want to stay are c.£500 a night lol so have any of you stayed there for any decent length of time? Do you have any tips on how to get more affordable accommodation? I'm probably going to be completely on my own first of all so I don't really want to get Airbnbs etc although not totally closed off to the idea. I do prefer some kind of hotel. Also I don't drive so will be getting taxis and buses for moving around. Places I'm looking forward to staying in initially are Papeete and Bora Bora. This will (hopefully) be January to March. Thanks in advance!

I've not been but am always curious to learn about new places. If you go, report back! Especially things with infrastructure -- how the internet and electrical is there, for instance. Good luck on your journey!
What's your worst client horror story?
Just had a friend tell me about his latest nightmare client. Brought back some PTSD from my freelancing days. The micromanaging. The scope creep. The "quick little changes". The clients who disappear for weeks then blame YOU for delays. We've all been there. What's your worst client horror story? The one that made you question your life choices?

There is a lot of detail behind the scenes that isn't worth spilling out, but suffice it to say that a company I contracted to do development on a per-project basis had another developer quit suddenly mid-project. They didn't ask me if I had availability to take it and dumped it on me, and had already set the end-client's expectations that I would now be the sole developer. I found so much incomplete, bad code. Bad design, no notes, no version control, no semblance of structure. He winged it the entire time and it was very apparent that he would "see something shiny" and start writing code in a new direction, leaving the module that he was just working on unfinished --- no updates, no notes, no reasons why. It was utterly horrendous. Weekly meetings with the end client as well, trying to keep the ship afloat.

@Simon Orgulan Yes it is. I've had issues with papers (I am finishing my degree). AI has wrecked so much...
I Built a Free App for Thailand Retirees... 👀
I just built this cool app for people looking to retire in Thailand. It'll tell you how much money you could save vs living in the UK. https://tools.brettdev.com/retirement-calculator It's still just a rough draft but give it a spin and leave your feedback in the comments below 👇🏻

Awesome tool, but you left out “excessive Leo and San Mig consumption.” ;)
