Digital Nomad's Social Media Compass
Do you find it difficult in finding the right social media platform which can be crucial for digital nomads looking to build a brand, attract clients, and earn a living. The most popular and effective channels vary significantly depending on the region. Here is a brief list to the most popular platforms for generating business leads in key countries. Please let me know if there are any platforms that I have missed!
East and Southeast Asia (A gold mine for teaching/coaching/mentoring)
  • Thailand & Vietnam: Facebook and TikTok are dominant. Facebook is used extensively for social commerce and community building, while TikTok is the go-to for viral, short-form video content and reaching a younger audience. LINE is also a major player in Thailand for direct customer communication.
  • China: The social media landscape is distinct. WeChat is the 'super app', used for everything from messaging to payments and business interactions. Other key platforms include Douyin (China's version of TikTok) for video content and e-commerce, and Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) for lifestyle and shopping.
  • Japan: LINE is the most popular messaging app and is integral for business communications. X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram are also highly popular, with Instagram being key for visual-focused brands and X for real-time updates and customer service.
  • South Korea: KakaoTalk is the leading messaging app and is a must for direct engagement with customers. Naver Blog is essential for search engine optimisation and building authority, while YouTube and Instagram are the top platforms for video and visual content.
Western Countries (I know Facebook should be on here!)
  • The UK & America: Instagram and LinkedIn are often the most effective for business. Instagram is ideal for showcasing a visual brand and attracting clients in creative fields, while LinkedIn is the premier platform for professional networking and securing business-to-business (B2B) services. Facebook and YouTube are also powerful for broad audience reach and long-form content.
Common Services Offered by Digital Nomads (what have I missed?)
Across these platforms, digital nomads build followings by offering services such as:
  • Content Creation: Writing blogs, articles, and social media posts.
  • Social Media Management: Running accounts for other businesses.
  • Virtual Assistant Services: Providing administrative support remotely.
  • Web Development & Graphic Design: Creating websites, logos, and other visual assets.
  • Online Coaching/Consulting/Teaching: Offering expertise in areas like fitness, business, or life skills.
