Have you been to French Polynesia?

So this is my number 1 place that I really want to go to. And in fact I have changed my travel plans so that I go there first when I leave the UK lol (yes I want to get as far away as possible 😂). Now all the places I really want to stay are c.£500 a night lol so have any of you stayed there for any decent length of time? Do you have any tips on how to get more affordable accommodation? I'm probably going to be completely on my own first of all so I don't really want to get Airbnbs etc although not totally closed off to the idea. I do prefer some kind of hotel. Also I don't drive so will be getting taxis and buses for moving around. Places I'm looking forward to staying in initially are Papeete and Bora Bora. This will (hopefully) be January to March.
