How Successful Self-Publishers Think Differently
Most people think their biggest problem with publishing a book is not knowing what to do. But, in reality, it’s about your mindset to overcome issues when they arise. A few mindset shifts I’ve seen make the biggest difference 👇 1️⃣ From “I need this to work fast” → “I’m building an asset.” Books aren’t lottery tickets. They’re digital assets you set up once and improve over time. have always seen my books as assets - sure, some don't work, but those breakout books that make thousands are worth the effort. Plus, some books that don't sell well on Amazon sell great on other platforms like TikTok! 2️⃣ From “I’m not a writer” → “I’m a problem-solver.” You don’t need to be creative. You need to help a specific reader with a specific problem. Plus, even if you don't want to write the book at all, it does not mean you can't be a successful self-publisher. Most of my books I leverage ghostwriters so that I can focus on the strategy of making that investment worth it! 3️⃣ From “I need it perfect” → “Done and optimized beats perfect.” Most successful books weren’t perfect at launch. They were improved after the data came in. I don't get hung up on perfection anymore; I get the books accomplished and published. There might be some minor typos or grammar issues I didn't catch in the initial editing - that's okay if someone catches it and complains, I go back in and find the error and fix the manuscript. Remember, you can make these updates as you go! 4️⃣ From “Why isn’t this selling?” → “What can I test or tweak?” Title, cover, description, categories—publishing is iterative, not personal. The authors who win long-term aren’t the smartest or most talented. They’re the ones who stay the course, keep testing, and don’t quit early. 👉 Curious—what mindset shift has helped you the most so far? Or which one do you struggle with right now?

@Krista Brea that's exactly what I need to do. I use to have shiny object syndrome, now I'm not moving, I'm sticking to my decision.

Roll Call 👀 Where Are You Checking In From?
We talk a lot about books📚 in here (and I 💙 that), but I’ve noticed something interesting 👀 People really light up when we get a little more personal and talk about life outside of publishing. So let’s do that for a minute. I’d love to know where everyone is from — city, state, country, wherever you’re calling home right now. 📍 I live in Illinois not too far from Chicago. Along with @Jeff Baer @Steve Gast @Susan Wright @Tara Adler @Angel Conway and probably a handful more!! I know @MJ Berst is in Wisconsin. I know we have @Bradley Deacon living in Vietnam / @Nicole Lesley in Australia Would love for everyone to drop it in the comments 👇 It’s always cool to see how global (and diverse) this community really is.

To AI or NOT to AI
@Krista Brea I was wondering what you do in this section and what do you think of it? I have books that I have written old school, AND I have written books using AI. I'm wondering if it affects how your books show up on Amazon search if they have been written with AI. It says it's just gathering information but we all know that they aren't the most "truthful".

👉 How Publishing Fuels My Travel Lifestyle
Self-publishing isn’t just about royalties for me. It’s about the lifestyle it unlocks. One of my biggest personal values is freedom—freedom to travel, to learn, to experience life outside of my desk. Publishing books and running a business supports that in ways most people don’t realize. Here’s something many people overlook: the expenses I already have for my business - go on business credit cards, and those expenses turn into points. Those points turn into trips. Last year I traveled a lot, but my biggest trip was to Hawaii for my 40th birthday—and I went all in. Business class flight. Reclining bed seat. A flight that easily would’ve cost $2,000… booked completely free with points. Worth every single point. I also traveled for business: - Orlando for Jen Gottlieb’s event - NYC (and used points for top-tier Broadway seats—yes, I saw Keanu Reeves on stage) - San Diego for another event, with a must-stop at the iconic Malibu Barbie Café (💥 Side story I have inserted a pic here of me and @Charles Leikauf he is another Skooler I met at Jen Gottlieb's event in 2024... and I randomly ran into him while I was in San Diego and we were both attending two completely different events! It's WILD how networking can be like that!) - Phoenix for James Wedmore’s BBD Live and I was hanging out with @Julie Bishop , where I made real connections and had major breakthroughs Books and businesses open doors far beyond income. Yes, royalties matter. But what excites me most is the life those books make possible—the rooms I get to be in, the people I meet, the experiences I can say yes to. If you love travel, learning, and building a life with more options… self-publishing can be a lot more than “just books.” Where will your books take you?
