a shift is happening you can feel it even if you can’t explain it

@Lawrence Neal please tell? I feel like something is shifting for me, but I haven’t fully figured out how to put it into words yet. What I do know is this: getting into the fitness industry has opened my eyes. I’m seeing a lot of vanity being sold as “health” — and it doesn’t sit right with me. I’ve seen too many 30-day shred challenges that take someone who’s already reasonably healthy and just run them into the ground, chasing a look instead of building anything real. And the second you show interest in anything decent online, you’re hit with DMs and quick-sell tactics. It all feels rushed, surface-level, and transactional. I believe there’s more to this. Real strength. Real energy. Being capable. Being present for your life and your family. That’s what matters — and I think that’s what’s missing

I’m working with two men right now to gather data and build some social proof. After that, I’ll look to ask for referrals and reviews. I’ve been helping men for free, which isn’t sustainable—and to be honest, free isn’t always taken seriously. I’m nearly qualified as a PT now, and I’ll also have an opportunity to interview for a gym manager position linked to my course, but this wont be on my hours/terms
$79,556 NZD in Her First Full Quarter
Over the last 7 months, I’ve had the pleasure of coaching Kyra Seiler 1-on-1. Kyra is the founder of Salus Strength. She used to train clients out of a commercial gym. The problem was she couldn’t control the environment, the equipment, or the experience she wanted to deliver. Growth was limited and everything depended on someone else’s setup. But then Kyra committed to building her own studio and we put a clear plan in place. Which led to opening Salus Strength in Auckland, generating $79,556 NZD in her first full quarter, increasing average client training frequency from 1.1 to 1.7 sessions per week, hiring a high-quality trainer with a Masters in exercise, and building a system ready to scale in 2026. And here’s what actually made it work: She followed the plan. When we set the steps, she executed. She stuck to the process. She got clear on the business she wanted and who she needed. Her trainer went through a rigorous right person, right seat hiring process. She worked hard. Daily. She reached out when she got stuck. One bad hire could have cost her months. We fixed it fast and moved on. She stayed focused. No distractions. Just great workouts, a great client experience, developing her trainer, and recruiting the right people. That’s the difference. Well done, Kyra. Here’s to an even bigger Q2!

Barbbells/dumbbell only?
Anyone here running their coaching business with just a barbell, dumbbells, and a basic rack setup? Is that a conscious choice, or just what you’ve got available? I’ve got two clients at the moment — one is flying and has picked up the movement patterns quickly. The other is struggling more, especially with hinge and squat patterns. Part of me thinks he’d progress faster using machines, just to get him moving and building confidence. But at the same time, I think sticking with free weights could be better long term, especially for improving his mobility and overall movement quality.

To respond to @Mark Baldwin & @Anthony Sandbothe can definitely see the benefit in both scenarios. For this specific guy (late 30s with young kids), he’ll be thankful for the mobility work. He’s a little overweight, but not obese. If he were obese, box squats at my home gym would be a solid choice. If he were to attend a commercial gym, leg extensions and curls would be a good option until he lost some weight. Thank you both for your feedback💙
