How can I improve my sensitivity during Chi Sao?
2 likes • Feb 2
Lewis, you might want to try closing your eyes during some chi sau training so you can force yourself to rely on feeling. Try it at various speeds. At least it will show you what's possible. It's not a miracle cure for feeling. That ultimately comes from experience, but maybe it could help you get over a hump.
Question
What are some good exercises for someone studying wing chun?

Do those footwork drills!
Forms, Chi-Sau, and Lat-Sau
Which one is your favorite thing to train and why?

Wow having to pick one is rough. They all work together. Forms are nice because I can train them anywhere without a partner. I love chi sau, but mainly love working on it with higher level people. I prefer lat sau with lower level people, especially when I can pull off the tricks I've learned from chi sau into it. There's more of a challenge to pull them off in that context rather than with someone trying to learn forward pressure. I suppose chi sau would be at the top if I had to pick because that's where you learn most of the fun stuff.

@Matthew Wright "impose it on other people." Haha I like that
The wing chun ring
Is it a useful training tool? Why or why not?

Those things are not useful as a training tool for chi sau. They teach you to give bad pressure and have bad positioning. It just can't replace chi sau with a partner. It's better to just do it in the air. Now if you tied it up and used it for target practice with a long pole, there's some use! You could also hit someone in the head with it, too
Origins of Wing Chun
We know the story of the founding of Wing Chun. It was named after the founder who was taught by Ng Mui in order to fight off a suitor who wanted to marry her. The problem is it sounds like the plot of a Kung Fu movie. What are your thoughts on how true the story is?

@Matthew Wright yeah I see Ng Mui listed a fair amount, and she's also treated like a legendary figure. Really, the origin story makes me think of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Ng Mui reminds me of Michelle Yeoh's character, and there's even a marriage plot line with Zhang Ziyi's character. Not 1 for 1, but you can see where the Kung fu plotline comes in. It's crazy that we don't know if Wing Chun was a real person given that wasn't that long ago
