It was a pleasure to sit down with Taylor on the Achieve Podcast recently to pull back the curtain on what it actually looks like to lead through "VUCA" (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity). Early in my career, I thought leadership was about the awards on the shelf or the size of the contracts. I had a massive ego, and it took losing almost everything in 2011 to realize that those external markers are fleeting. I shared a story in this episode about having $14 in my pocket and being floated $3 for a burger—a moment of "favor" that stripped away my ego and taught me that leadership is a God-given mission, not a title. Here are three principles I’ve lived by since that pivot point: - The "VUCA Flip": The world hits us with Volatility and Uncertainty (External). Our job is to counter it with Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Adaptability (Internal). You can’t control the economy, but you can control your internal compass. - The Rule of Five: In every partnership, I give five reasons why we should work together—and five reasons why we shouldn't. Radical honesty creates alignment. If you aren't a good fit for someone, telling them is the highest form of integrity. - Impression vs. Inspiration: My job isn’t to impress you; it’s to inspire you to let your own light shine. If I’m the only one who can carry the message, I’ve failed as a leader.
